Front strut removal question

I want to remove the front struts to install the rennline extended sway bar drop links.
I was hoping to avoid having to take apart the ball joints, as I've read this can be quite difficult. But after removing the brake disc and caliper, and removing the nuts holding the top of the strut, it will not move down far enough to get the strut out of the spindle.
Is disconnecting the ball joint and tie rod the only way? Tips for doing so?

1) get two people just for safety
2) push down on the strut assembly/ control arm
3) pull the top of the strut outside of the fender. Protect the fender from the studs from hitting it as this is tight
4) pull strut up and out again one person protecting the fender
