Default Answering the question no one asked.

A few years ago I had just finished a track day with my 997 GT2 and was pondering how fast I could make my 996 GT2 if I was willing to rip it totally apart and make it into a race car. Two and a half years later I answered my own question...

Pretty damn fast. Like 810hp to the rear wheels driving 2700 pounds fast.

I am sure that I'm forgetting something but here's a basic list of the modifications: total engine rebuild by BodyMotion including Pauter rods, complete lower end overhaul including chains, guides, rods intermediate, main bearings, port matched five angle grind race quality valve job, Mahler Motorsport Pistons, fabrication and welding of all water outlet pipes and replacement of all water hoses, new Alpha 3071 turbos custom intake, 5 inch intercoolers Greddy Profec and engine tuning by Protomotive, removal of stock exhaust replaced by 3 inch SS straight pipes, A/C removed, total transmission rebuild using 997 GT2 and GT3 RS parts by California Motorsports Inc., G50 diff shims, 997 Cup suspension, three-way adjustable MCS shocks, PFC enduro race pads with Brembo six piston calipers and floating aluminum hat rotors, wheel studs, PFC RH665.4 racing brake fluid, Odyssey battery with billet aluminum mount, Hoosier S80 and S100 slicks in 355/60 R18 rear and 315 front, forge line GA3R 18X12 wheels, redline fluids, 996 GT3 RSR Front bumper, front fenders, rear bumper, rockers and rear fender flares, lightweight composite hood and rear deck lid and doors, GT3 cup wing, Lexan front rear and side glass, gut front headlights for weight savings, RaceTech seat and Schroth 6 point belt, LMP steering wheel with quick disconnect, head side nets, fire sense fire suppression system, custom cage by Rennsport in Tulsa.

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head.

So to give some context to the pictures, the car was originally silver. I changed it to a matte black wrap when it was reasonably modified. It then went to the golf blue and orange wrap after the turbo work was done. Once all four fenders had to be cut and replaced for the widebody kit I decided to paint the car white.

Two years ago it was raced in Grassroots Motorsports Ultimate Tack Car Challenge and came in fourth with a time of 1:54 at VIR. This year, after the wide body work, it came in fifth with a time of 1:53 but the suspension was not fully sorted and the car was down on power due to an intake leak. I fully expect next year that it will run a 1:50 flat.

Thanks for posting the picture. Glad you did. I just thought I'd share my odyssey with this wonderful car with enthusiasts who have a passion for these cars also. I have had a dozen people tell me that I could've done the same thing with a turbo by removing the four-wheel-drive system. For me, it was all about the authenticity of having a GT2.

If any of you guys go to Hallett, let me know. I'm planning to have the car out there for a bunch of track days this spring and summer. Would love to run with another GT2.

Love the wide body kit, especially the nose. Sick power to weight ratio. Awesome work, great job!! Thanks for posting.

Great story, thank you for sharing. Like you, I have a passion for the GT2 and enjoy seeing what the car can do. Your car looks great and 810 rwhp is awesome. Modding is like an adventure that does not have to end (albeit an expensive one). I am still wondering where I will stop.

I'm not how Rob posted a picture within this thread, I just tried to do it and it failed miserably. Technology is not my forte so I took a camera phone picture of my dyno results and uploaded it to the Dropbox file above.

Ssigarto, for me the turning point was when I decided that (without ungodly effort) the car could not be returned to stock. That's when I pushed the chips all in. Until that point I told myself that it could all be undone.

I have an E30 M3Cecotto that is painfully correct and perfect. Embarrassing to admit but I buy OEM oil filters and windshield wipers. So I did not take modding this very special Porsche lightly. Ultimately, these cars are rolling art, wickedly fast entertainment and a passion for their owners. Somehow, making this car faster than just about anything from Ferrari or Lamborghini seemed right.
