996 GT3 - track vs. street setup and cost est.
Just getting some information... you know this isn't going to end well...
Based on my 993 experience, I know first hand the $ of valuable track modifications. Want to get a sense of buying 'built' vs. doing it yourself with this platform.
Trying to list and quantify the details and cost of starting with a stock 996 GT3, to get the car to where it should be for track use. Not racing, and assuming it gets driven to and and from (not trailered).
I'll start:
Good race seats installed $3K
OE roll bar $1K
Harnesses, track wheels and tires, race pads...
Then what?
What needs to be done to a 10 year old GT3 that is exclusively being used for track fun?
Cheers
Matt

Matt - add toe links if the car doesn't have them. A must 600-1000 installed with alignment.
Track alignment - will depend on the tires you choose, certainly rotating the shocks to get -2 canber and then shims to get a little more in front.
RSS kit to remove the rubber bushing in the suspension - 4-5K installed.
I'd stop there and would not remove the cats for fear of not passing sound at Tremblant.
Best,

If LSD hasn't been taken of go guard and hae coolant fittings pinned or welded. Get motons or similar and get shorter r/p plus regear- pure nirvana : ). Anyway I'm going off what's your budget after initial purchase price of 6gt3? Mike

IMO, here is the minimum set of upgrades for a car that will get regular track use:
1. Track seats and harness bar - $3K-$5K, depending on what you get
2. Adjustable toe links w/ a compromise street//track alignment - $700
3. Weld or pin coolant fittings and replace hoses (unless done recently) - $3K-$4K
4. Rebuild stock diff w/ Guard internals - $2K (it's been a while; my recollection of price might be off here)
5. Good track pads - $700
6. Good compromise street/track tires - $1K-$1.5K
Of course you can delete any item that the previous owner already covered. Good luck with your purchase.
Forgot to add:
7. Harness + head & neck restraint - $1K

done all of above....the suspension really transforms the car making it relatively easy to drive...
much more economical to buy on with all done...usually same cost as stock gt3........
and if you do mod it, don't save any receipts ... it's too painful...

FAR more expensive to add all the mods yourself (ask me how I know)...
All the above is spot-on advice... Rear Toe Links are a must as losing alignment back there causes a handful at track speeds! Also recommend race seats so you are not sliding around the stock seat with the "three point" seat belts. Upgrade to race pads (Pagid, PFC, etc.) and change to a high temp brake fluid. I'd recommend starting with street tires until you graduate to R-Comps, and also get a track alignment. Lastly, I'd put on the Cup brake ducts in front. Sure, they are "cheap" plastic that cost several hundred dollars, but they work well at cooling the front brakes. That saves money on wear and worse - ruined track days...
The biggest "consummable" budget items are the tires and pads. Get used to crazy expenses there! IMHO the biggest effect on tire wear is the alignment. To get really good even wear on your tires (if you are rotating the car properly) is aggressive camber and some toe. Unfortunately, what works on the track will cause uneven wear for street driving. Lots of threads on this topic to review!
Good luck and enjoy these amazing cars!

Thanks everyone, lots of common recurring advice here.
With my 993, I am already familiar with what's involved with seats/roll bar/harnesses/HANS/track tires and pads etc. I was really inerested in what is specific to the Gt3 - and looks like a good list above.
I'll do some research on my own, won't ask any more questions until/unless there's an immediate need.
Oh, and yeah, never look at the receipts. Anyone want to see a 6 figure 993???

I've been doing a lot of research and shopping for 996 GT3s. From what I can tell tasteful useful track mods appear to add some value to the price of the car vs. a completely stock car assuming the mods are easily reversible and factory parts are included. so 10K worth of mods might add say 2-3K to the price of a stock GT3.
All things being equal I'd prefer to pay a bit more to get the car with a few mods. I think the difference between what the OP has in mind and what I have in mind is the OP said "exclusively" for track which would likely need a few more mods than what most GT3s out there are sold with.

To get started I would recommend the following:
1) Safety - Cage, Seats, Harnesses, Hans
2) Good Alignment
3) R Comp Tires
4) Coolant lines Welded/Pinned is $5000.
Best to purchase a car with the mods already. If anything you will pay less than a more stock car.
