Hi Andy,
The 300M hubs are certainly not cheap at $2600 for the pair. That's essentially cost on them. You only need them for the rear of the car as that is where the majority of the load is concentrated. Price would come down a tiny bit with a larger batch order but would still be about $2.5k/pair. 300M is a very expensive material as is the EDM hot wire process to make the splines along with cryo and heat treating. For me it made sense as the last failure I had cost me close to $5000 in collateral damage and I lost all confidence in the stock hubs. For many swapping out the old hubs with oems is likely sufficient.

I ran into a similar issue with my Audi TT track car. The solution I found was to re-pack the bearings with RedLine wheel bearing grease, replace the hubs/axles after every 40 hours of use. Bearings are replaced every 20 hours.

Having a failure like this is scary as hell!

Finally picked up the rear 300M hubs today... I have to say they exceed my expectations. These are forged out of 300M (Vacuum remelt steel), heat and cryo treated. Based on the metallurgical assessment, these are calculated to be close to 200% stronger that the OEM hubs. I have an extra pair available if any hardcore track guy is interested. On the stock hubs I've been averaging 2000 track miles between failure$ so the OEMs are an annual replacement for those tracking hard averaging 20-25 days per year. If you are putting in a lot of track miles on slicks, these will provided peace of mind. The hubs will fit the rear of any 5 lug 996/997TT, 996/997GT2/3. They are not cheap at $1300 each but they are the last hubs you'll need to buy..

Nice new jewelry, were you changing your hubs out each winter/every other the past few years?

I sprung for a set of fresh stock ones after thinking about scenarios hub failure could put you in.

Cool that you're always helping others out with your ongoing project - M

That's correct Mark, every year. The last 997 hub that broke had 4522 miles on it (included 2402 track miles, 110 sessions = 45.8 track hours). This was on 245/305 NT01s. With the 275/335 NT01s the regular hubs would last even less, I'm thinking 25 track hours between preventative replacement. If running slicks, this would be reduced to 20hrs in my estimation. I'm on borrowed time on the 997 hubs right now so I'm glad these finally came in. The problem with having the OEM hubs fail is not the cost of the hub but all the collateral damage. When the hub fails you will wipe out the rear caliper along with the brake rotor (if running multi piece rotors with aluminum hats. You will also destroy the spline on the axle and will damage the upright. All in all it's about +$3500 in parts and another $1000-1500 in labor every time you have a failure. Luckily mine have all failed mid turn or on turn exit and did not cause me to loose control. At 150mph the story might be different. When you factor that in, the 300M hubs at $2600/pair start to make sense. For me it was a question of piece of mind.

That is some great machining there! 300M machines pretty nice and stable, which is good for keeping tight tolerances.

The 300M hubs are initially machined slightly oversized. After heat treat and cryo, final machining was done to exacting tolerances as all metals will "move" slightly when heat treated. This ensures that the final product is dead on spec.

The extra set of hubs are sold. If there is any interest by anyone down the line I can get them made with a 30 day lead time.
