Default Similarities between early 996 and new GT3?

I was looking at the GT3 panorama issue and found a lot of similiarites between the early ('99) 996 and the new GT3.

What do you guys think.

Here is what I 've come up with;

996 vs. GT3

mech throttle X X
LSD X X
weight (3000,3043) X X
Rear Wheel Drive X X
No PSM X X
No TC X X
Dry Sump 0 X
Ceramic Brakes 0 X
Horsepower 0 X
GT3 seats 0 X
Third Radiator 0 X

I guess it gets a little fuzzy from here, but these are some of the
major points I came up with. I think some of these can be changed or
modified on the earlier 996 to have it made comparable to the GT3.

What do you guys think?

-Freddy

Just some food for thought and only expressing my humble opinion.

The early 996 has a smaller displacement and a different cylinder firing order, too.

Same firing order, actually. But less displacement.

Also less torsional rigidity. They did something to the frame on the 02s and up, although I've never heard the numbers actually stated...

If that is your list of similarities, most 911's have about the same number of similarities with the GT3 as does your 996!

Even though there are obvious important differences, when Porsche decided to build a real drivers car in the GT3, they went back to basics with lighter weight, 2wd, manual transmission, mechanical throttle, an LSD, and no electronic driver aids. Not a bad general description of a ’99 C2 coupe. So I can see where Freddy was going with his post. But I admit to a certain amount of bias……

Paul,

I have said this before here.... THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANY CHANGE TO THE FIRING ORDER... WHETHER 3.4 LITER OR 3.6 LITER. ALL CARRERA's and GT3's HAVE THE SAME FIRING ORDER 1-6-2-4-3-5!

The '04 GT3 does not have a mechanical throttle linkage, it uses the Motronic ME7.8 engine managment system with electronic throttle.

I like this post.... I feel a lot better now....

Can't do anything about the dry sump (or can I?)
Planning to install the 3rd radiator
Can't do anything about the hp and torque difference (but that's okay... for now)
GT3 seats (I guess I can save up for that)
I don't think I need the ceramic brakes (never driven a car with it.... so I won't miss it).

If I can only save up to give my 996 a proper diet......

The motor on the GT3 is the same block as the motor they used in the GT1.

It is pretty much THEEEE difference between the GT3 and and other 996.
And with that the 996 is NOTHING, repeat, NOTHING like the GT3.
Case closed.

To be honest this string is kind of misleading and kind of wishful thinking for those people who have a 996 and wish it was a GT3.

Hmmmm... 300bhp vs 360bhp and half a second sprint to 60. I wish. I really wish.

Oh, c'mon can't we have a little fun! The original post in this thread was acknowledging the minimalist approach of the GT3 and how in some ways, that might be closer to the philosophy of a basic C2 coupe than one of the more heavily optioned, all singing, all dancing variants. I can see the point of that argument, at some level. Can't you? I'm not delusional about this in any way. I love my 996, but do I wish it were a GT3? Absolutely! Lighten up just a little, RR.

Right!, so what you're saying is that the GT3 and a 99 C2 have slightly different engines, but basically the same car right? Sounds about right to me too.

Have no idea what your point is and the premise of this string is really boring, not to mention juvenile, and feminine. My mom or gf (people who know nothing about cars) would probably say the same thing as St Pauli said.

I had a 99 996 C2 manual with LSD. I spent mega bucks putting in GT3 brakes, GT3 suspension components, GT3 seats, third radiator, etc. , essentially everything I could except the engine and tranny ($50K conversion cost). I spent well over the price of a new GT3 if they had been available at the time in the US. What I ended up with is a car that could handle and brake just as well as a GT3 but was 60 Hp light on power. It was and is a nice car but it ain't no GT3 and never will be.

Geez, okay! My bad. No need to yell. I heard that it was different from my dealer, who was obviously mistaken.
