Default High Oil Pressure?

Just got my new to me 6GT3 and noticed that while driving normally, oil pressure is pegged at 5 bar. It does drop when idleing to around 2-3. is this normal? Just wasn't sure, no warning lights, car drove well. No one mentioned anything about this during PPI. Thoughts?

More than likely a sending unit.

Hav you checked level yet?

And check the oil level as well, both on the dashboard and manually with the dip stick. If it's the sending unit, it's easy to replace.

Mine does the same thing (Ithink). When cold and/or under accleration the reading is higher. When at idle it is much lower. And I think this is normal.

sender units on way out, at some point it'll become erratic and give you a mini heart attack.

common fault and easy to change, its on right side of engine sticking straight out.

Mine has done this for the 5.5 years that I've owned it.

Oil pumps are typically mechanical and run off the crank. So more rpms means the pump is spinning faster and delivering more oil to the engine. Idle is a low load on the moving parts and oil pressure is 25-40 lbs. Under a load you want and need 80 and above. This is for all cars and trucks, not just Porsche.

What you described is normal. Now if it was dropping to 1 or below at idle when hot, then you have problems...

When the sender starts to go it'll read zero and the warning light will go on. But (being dry sump) you should be fine even reading zero - unless you see oil pouring out of the back of the car. First time was a minor heart attack. After that it's par for an old unit. Mine goes in and out almost regularly.

Mine did exactly that. Was thinking rebuild(heart attack) but after compression/leakdown tests done results came out with flying colors. Just had oil sender replaced recently. I'm still worried though. I'll find out on next track weekend. Mike

The owners manual doesn't give a minimum idle oil pressure. It does IIRC state something like minimum at 3000 rpm is 3.5 bar.

I know this is an old thread, but after picking up the car following a week in the shop, I was up for a bit of "spirited" driving. During some Florida Twisties-banging sharp rights/lefts, the check oil light came on for a split second. Cardiac arrest followed, as I drove home at a very sedate pace. I did do the oil level check routine, about 12 times, which showed plenty of juice back there. The oil pressure stays in the 3 range unless I goose it hard or downshift, as it should. All seems ok, but I'm sure I shaved a few months off my heart's useful life.

As others stated check the sending unit. Mine decides to go crazy at the most inopportune times. Have had a replacement sending unit sitting there for months and have never installed it. Can't be more than a 10-15 min job.
