My GT3 is now up to 16k on the odometer, and I have roughly 120 hours of track time on the motor. Only two issues since buying the car in 2006 have been 1) water pump failure during first month of ownership, and 2) blown coolant line on the track (not epoxy issue -line cracked due to heat & time)

Speaking with my mechanic, I hear that the 997.2 GT3 engines are more troublesome (DFI?). I think the 996 wins for reliability based on what I am seeing...

I came close to buying a Cup car and going "all in", but my mechanic argued that I have a great car now! I agree with him.

997 GT3 doesn't have DFI, but 991 does...

Damn, sorry about that.... Thanks Grant. I need to turn in my Mezger card!

I need to do a Rennlist search on the .2RS engine issues... Harmonics?

I feel strongly that my next race car will be a 996 GT3. I haven't a clue of when that'll be, just sayin'

Perhaps I'll adopt one of Mooty's projects.
BTW Mooty, did you sell your 4.0?
Exiting turn 16 at Sebring I learned the hard way if you put 4 off and don't slow enough those hot sticky tires will jerk you into the jersey barriers, I broke 2 of them.

Agreed on the 996 being ugly as bowl of dicks

However, we do share the same engine and tranny. I'm almost at 40k now. Lots of it being track miles. Gives me pause.
I sold my 996 GT3 with just over 60,000 miles. 25K track. dynode at 55,000 and 356 at the wheels.

burned Gen ! PCCB front at 28K
FMS and RMS.. only repairs
Super freaking cars.

the RMS issue seems to be the main one
so people like me know, what are the symptoms (presumably an oil leak but where, how much etc) and how much does this cost to repair?

is it something people get done before it fails?

might be the wrong thread for this question, but it seems to be the biggest engine failure related item on the car

^actually the glued on coolant fittings is the worst thing IMO and that applies to all generations of gt3's. I remember someone posted on rl dumped coolant and can't account how long the duration was but after noticing leaks(oil) here and there - it was recommended to open motor. Many years ago. Don't know what happened since then. Mike

motor and tranny connection will be a little wet with oil. Not sure how big a deal it really is but it was warranty deal so had it done. I have a 2001 SL with a leak for the last 3 years. Very small and I never loose enough oil to do anything but top off between changes.

The strange thing about the coolant pipe epoxy issue is that here in Australia no one I have spoken to has heard of the issue or seen it happen. Sure there aren't as many GT3s in Aus but its still strange to me. Is it climate related?

I don't see why you should be surprised. Don't forget that even though rennlist is a great resource, it's still the internet.

There are certain members that seem to have a bias to portray these cars in the most possible negative light. Then there are other members that just BEAT on their cars.

Not climate - geography. Since you are upside down in OZ, the weight of the engine pushes down onto the coolant lines, holding them tightly in place.

they do ,in fact blow up sometimes. I just dropped a valve recently in an 04 gt3, 35 mph on a local bridge. ouch!. Also, I am told that one completely grenaded at thunderbolt 2 weeks ago. Both heavily tracked cars

Here in Switzerland too! The Porsche garage that fields a GT3 Cup car didn't think it was an issue. I mentioned that it is well documented in the USA, but they have never seen a failure. They claim other things fail like water pump and gaskets, and these are verified during their "race-check" service.
