Yes, going on about 16 months strong on my chirping RMS. It's never changed in pitch, or volume, and importantly remains leak free. I am curious to this GT3 variant that is leak free. Maybe when a new clutch goes in when that time comes.

Thanks greatly for the follow up email!

I also had the engine dropped, coolant pipes were welded, and rear main seal was changed along with all the belts. I also have the same sound and the car is running great.

The older (non-teflon) style seal does not handle a crankcase running a vacuum. There are photos and a bit of description *HERE*. The chirp/whistle was noticed back in the nineties when the 993 was raced professionaly. I guess what I am wondering is that if the seal is whistling, then the crankcase is not holding a vacuum, which means you are losing 5-10HP?

Exact as video in thread Will update when I get part numbers Mk
Interested to find out possible non-chirp part number also, engine coming out soon so a fix would be welcome.

Hi all,
My car has developed this chirp suddenly. Car has around 29-ish thousand miles. Was there any conclusion to this issue?
Thanks,
Dean

Just got my car back from a RMS replacement (997 GT3 seal leaked last year, so had a 996 Turbo RMS installed under warranty this year), part number 999-113-426-41. However, I am now getting what I guess you could consider a chirping noise. Really difficult to tell where it's coming from. There's enough sound in the engine where it's difficult to hear it clearly. You can hear it from under the car, so that makes me think it could be the RMS as mentioned here. Does not go away when the clutch is depressed. When you apply load to the engine, you cannot hear it (probably because the rest of the car is so loud) but you can hear it when coming off load and RPM's are coming back down to idle.

I do plan to have my shop take a listen to it when I get time to drive down there (they're an hour away).

Two videos with the noise, linked. It's not the normal Mezger noise and rattles, it's a more hollow sound, sort of what I would consider sounding like setting down a plastic cup, or some sort of noise you'd make with your mouth (as weird as that sounds). First video is a bit better and you do have to turn the volume up quite a bit since it's in the background (it's difficult to hear over the normal Mezger sounds).

Not positive, but I think the chirping is a vacuum leak past the RMS, does not affect everyone, and I am uncertain as to the fix. I updated mine with the new 997 and ring as described in a TSB. search on rbahr, I posted the TSB some time ago.

Thanks for the info Ray. I had the 997 GT3 seal in my car last year and it leaked. So went with the 996 Turbo seal this year, which now chirps. My shop does a lot of 997 GT3’s and even more Mezger cars, so I have confidence without question in their work and their ability to install the seal. My concern was the chirping was some sort of an issue that needed to be corrected. But from an hour of reading it doesn’t sound like a concern. Anyone else with input, feel free to chime in.

When they installed the seal, did they also install the metal ring?

Just asked them to confirm. I noticed it on my invoice last year when they installed the 997 GT3 part. Didn’t notice it on my invoice from this year. Not sure if It’s reusable or not and maybe that’s why I’m not noticing it listed.

Either way, I’m going to have them listen to it soon and then will report back on any updates.

as far as "is this chirp noise a problem"...I think many of us, myself included, have given it quite the test of time and come way with no issues other than the noise itself. Mine is still in the car from 2014-2015 timeframe and still chirping away but also still bone dry.
