First: This is not my car, and my car is not in close proximity to me currently for me to check. Helping a friend get his coolant pipes welded and looking at his motor noticed something I can't remember from my car.

cam covers have an area that's ground down and has engraving on it. Is this standard and something I just didn't notice on mine before. Anyone know what it means?

Odd, don't remember that from mine. Can't imagine that came out of the factory that way with the ground down area.

I believe this is normal. I have seen this on other engines as well as my own (three numbers engraved).

Mine is back in the garage and I was able to confirm that indeed mine has this too...although the numbers on mine are different.

Would be interesting to know what it represents.

Totally normal. The cam covers and cam housings are matched pairs. This ensures they don't get mixed up. There will be a matching engraving on the cam housing too.
Should you ever need a new cam cover for any reason you need to buy a replacement cover and housing
