Battery tender usage

Two winters in Switzerland has cost me two batteries, so I finally purchased the OEM battery tender from the dealership.
I decided to get the battery terminal clips so I could keep the windows up.
For those using the terminal clips, do you close the hood completely? Do you disconnect the vent tube? When you disconnect the charger, is it necessary to leave the hood open for a while?
I remember some horror stories about battery gases causing a fire at startup, and want to ensure it doesn't happen to me.

Don't disconect the vent tube.
Use the cigarette lighter connection. Close the door on the cord. It will be fine.

^I'll have to go look for that. Where is it? I've used the cig lighter adapter for many years without issue, leaving the pax window cracked a bit.

^It's unique to the 996/986. Look under both your doors. You'll see it.
Porsche stopped this with the 997/987.

You don't need to run the cord through an open window. Just close it on the cord. Been doing this for MANY years, without issue. That's probably why Porsche eliminated the notch in the bottom door seal with the 997/987.
For long term storage, I don't want open windows for several reasons; dust, security, and mainly because I use desiccators in the cabin (and trunk/frunk) to keep moisture to a minimum. An open window would defeat that.

I have used the OEM cig lighter adapter for many years and have no issues keeping the door closed on the wire.

The 996 had a notch in the rubber door seal. The 997 has an 'open cell' area of the rubber door seal where the notch used to be. So, for 997s, plug into the cig lighter and run the cord under the door at the open cell portion of the rubber seal.
To the OP, if you access the battery directly (with clamps or eyelets, etc), leave the plastic cover off (the one that covers the entire battery area with the two turn clips), run the tender wires out the top where the windshield wipers are and then just run the cord off the side of the car.
Leave the Moll OEM vent tube connected! Unless you want acid spewing all over your battery tray...

I just got an Odyssey 925 and Rennline mount to replace my faltering 40lb lead brick. Do any of you guys use a cigarette lighter charger for Odyssey batteries? I prefer that approach to putting clips directly on the battery terminals.

I have an Odyssey and use the clips directly on the battery. I just run the cord up between the body panels so it comes out right at the bottom of the windshield on the drivers side and then shut the hood. Not the best explanation since I doesn't go through any body panels but there is a little panel gap between the top of the fender and the windshield wiper cowl (if I remember correctly) which then allows you to shut the hood without closing the wire in it. Hopefully that makes a little sense
