Default diff question

My tech said the diff is shot on my car which I was pretty much expecting based on all I had read. Car has 22k miles now and I still have yet to put it on the track but it is ready except for the diff.

How bad will it be for me to track the car with a shot diff? What will I feel or sense?

Pros?

Cons?

Way more stable especially when braking in a high speed downhill braking zone.

A working diff is worth the $$$. For safety.

Pros? you will not miss the track event.

Cons? will not be pure driving bliss. as others stated, rear stability under braking lessened. Mid corner understeer.

One can track with bad diff, just not as fun or fast.

How can you think about venturing onto a track with a car that is not 100% mechanically sound?

I could envision catastrophic failure with the diff blowing up/coming apart and the car leaving the track or even worse the failed diff littering the track with diff shrapnel and diff fluid and someone else leaving the track with maybe dire consequences.

Get the diff fixed. Drive the car some to shake down the diff repair. Then if all is well hit the track. The odds are higher that is all you will hit.

I think he just meant the diff is worn.. (the friction plates) So it is acting like a open diff...

Yeah no problem tracking with fried lsd - just slower laptimes. Can't brake late(severe rear end waggle) or power out/rotate as well with a functioning LSD. Go Guard!!! Mike

Exactly. Tom you'll be essentially running it as an "open" diff. I'd plan not to set any lap records and expect the car to be more "lively" under braking and rotating in corners. Ping GT Gears. Matt Quoted me $1000 to rebuild mine to his specs if I pull it and ship it to him. There is a good DIY here on doing it, and it seems like it's about 3 hours to pull it.

And Macster, Every event I go to, there are probably 50% or more of the cars on track with open diffs. Let's not hit the panic button.

Thanks guys, I ment lsd which everyone picked up on. I am taking my techs word for it but will likely lift the car on one side with a jack and try to spin the rear wheel and see if I have any resistance which is another way I heard on here that you can see if your lsd is shot.

That doesn't really test the functionality of the LSD other than the preload.. (since the LSD locks under power / braking through the force being appled on the ramps)

Light up the rear tires to see if you leave 2 strips (instead of one) would be a better test..

open diff is just fine
working LSD is better
all my GT3 are open diff., aghast.
however, if one of you would buy me a guard diff, i would take it in a heart beat.

I have asked Matt via pm who he suggests for removal of my lsd in or around San Antonio. I read the DIY and tho I feel good about many maint things on my cars thanks to Mikelly's help over the years, this one sounds pretty intimidating and I fear I might mess something up so I will wait to hear back from Matt.

Worst case is I have a trusted source in Houston who can do it but then I have to get the car to him. Thanks for everyones help!

I drove mine with a shot diff for a while. No harm. Nothing is going to break. It'll be fine.

Got my fixed LSD from Matt. Rennsport in Sealy put it in. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Good info my man! Akram might be to busy to mess with it but I have sent him a text. I assume they took it out and put it in for you? What kind of turn around?
Labor cost and rebuild cost? You can pm me if you wish.

Tom
