Stuck out of gear (with car on), shifts fine when off

A buddy's GT3 has an interesting problem. When running, you can't engage a gear. When off, you can get into any one of them, but it is pretty hard to get out. And, once out, no getting back in until you turn the car off.
Anyone experience this? Thoughts?

Just had this happen to mine. Culprit could be a number of different things. At the end of the day, the pressure plate is not disengaging the clutch from the flywheel so you have to determine why that is. I would start with the hydraulic system - pop the round inspection cover just towards the rear of the slave on the driver's side and see if the clutch fork moves when you depress the pedal. No, then you have air in the system, have a bad master, or have a bad slave. I suppose something could also be jamming the clutch fork but that is probably pretty rare. Clutch fork moving? Then you have to drop the transmission to see what is really going. Could be that the clutch fork ears disengaged from the throw out bearing ears, could be that fingers are bent or broken on the pressure plate, could be that the straps on the pressure plate are broken.
That's how I approached the problem on mine. I'm sure there could be other reasons why and I am by no means an expert here but that's my two cents.

Most common cause will be hydraulic (slave cylinder or master cylinder).
I worked on one car that had a failed pressure plate cause this issue, and it wasn't obvious. We pulled the tranny out 3 or 4 times to check everything before we decided to try a new pressure plate, and it worked. But more than likely, your buddy's car has a hydraulic issue.

Thread bump, what was the result?
Having the same issue, if I haven't driven for few days when started from cold it won't go into any gear. If the engine is off I can select all gears. No jump when starting in 1st with clutch pressed. If I start the car and leave for 5minutes to warm then eventually you can select all gears. Outside temp is aprox 40f so not abnormally cold.

Pressure plate was installed the wrong way round when they put they new plate and lwfw in. This from a well known GT shop... Not the same one I use now.
