Lightbulb Lipless

I lost another front lip this weekend at the track; nbd; got it back; but F, its frustrating. Anyway, going to try a new method which I don’t think I’ve even seen discussed here before, which should be gapless, but still break free in case of an off.

Pushpins and silicone sealant, I know, but I’m ready to ditch the push pins; the factory push pins, they just weaken their grip if you just look at them funny.

I am going to use nylon bolts, metal washers, and nylon nuts. These will allow for a little more clamping force to hold the lip firm to the bumper, I won’t have to use gap-inducing tape (I still plan to use a little silicone), and it will still break free as needed. I’ve used similar, smaller nylon bolts for other safety-break kinds of applications before without issue; we'll see if it transfers to this application.

FWIW, I ran lipless for 3 or 4 sessions, and I don’t think I felt much of a difference except for perhaps at peak speeds on the back straight at VIR ~145+; just *a little* front end movement; how much more due to the lip is impossible to quantify. I readily admit I need the lip for perception of grip

I’ll report back with pictures (of course) when I am done, hopefully this weekend.

tape plus silicone is the way to go in my opinion. It's not the prettiest but neither is the alternative which is duct tape. I've got push pins on the sides and the factory plastic screw fitting on the leading edges. I run slighly lower speed tracks than you but have never had an issue with mine on either the OEM or the cup splitter with this setup.

...and the thing drags every time I pull into the driveway when I drive it on the street so it gets a pretty good workout

I have been using pishpins/double sided tape/silicone for the past couple years. I think it's the best solution. On my black car, you can barely even see that the black silicone is there.

It's also very useful for the occasional scrape on steep driveways. The silicone keeps the lip on while the lip bends back to absorb impact. If you hit anything serious, the lip will break away. I like it better than bolts that can tear your bumper.

Yeah see, I don't want the gap caused by tape, and secondly, the nylon bolts will snap before tearing the bumper.

The silicone fills in the gaps caused by the tape, so it's a non-issue.

Duct tape 3 lines - ugly as hell but works on small offs. Kinda similar to those jdm cars with a carbon lip spoiler with those steel braided cables bolted to the bumper but so much prettier. U will have no gap issues running duct tape. I've lost 6 in 1st year of tracking only one over the last 7 years with duct tape and it was my friend who spun my car 720 that lost the last lip spoiler!!!! Mike

Also lost a lip this weekend avoiding a spun car. Must have driven right over it but it seems fine. Lost a rear (new glass fibre) brake duct too (still to report back on that experiment).

Mike - can you just explain what you mean re the Duct tape ie 3 vertical strips like left, mid, right from bumper over lip and onto bumper on the inside/back?

The walk through the paddock retrieving the lip from the marshals is something we all have done. In Scott's case, I even have the picture to prove it.

Here's a pic. No gap issues and has protected lip spoiler from popping off on small offs. Regards. Mike

keeping car on track extends spoiler life.

Can't learn limits of car if u never spun : ). Mind you try doing it on safer ones 1st. I can definitely say it'll bite u in the butt- lol. Live and learn from it. I'm so use to clutch/brake depressed and steering straight- odds are way better then trying to save it depending where the danger zones are. But seriously I don't like spinning and if I got plan B- I'm so there. Mike
