Default New Guy Question

New guy to the 6GT Forum. Sold my 996T and doing the search/learning about the GT3.

Have read back-posts and really helpful info. Looked at a couple cars largely stock w/18K - 25K mostly street miles. Even w/a glowing PPI, it looks like any car that hasn't had it, is going to need LSD rebuild and water line welds for peace of mind (and meet some, like OH, track requirements) before putting $ into upgrades.

Posts suggest budget around $1500 and $2500 respectively if independent does work (also would probably do some "while I'm there work and save upgrade labor like RMS/LWF) plus whatever maintenance/upgrades needed? Does that soud about right, just want to go in eyes wide open. Thanks, Mark

I do track my car on a regular bases and have all original water lines. Car has now ran more then 90.000 kilometers so not all lines blow. Car is still under warranty so might do it soon though. If you look for cars with low mileage: LSD could be good still. All depends on usage. Would test it during PPI by taking drive shafts off. That's the only proper way to test. And if fried: LSD plate change is not so expensive though. Parts are around 500 US$ i guess. Labour maybe 2 to 3 hours.

Default Budget Fix

Thanks addict,

LS sounds less expensive to upgrade than thought (read a couple track days would toast the original) and the water line problem seemed to be getting more attention as a potential problem w/Pano article, Ohio requirement and forum posts (though never had a problem w/my 996T lines). Thanks, Mark

60,000 miles on my 2004 GT3 >30,000 track never had a problem with lines. LSD rebuilt 3 times by Porsche, then Guard which lasted longer than the the other 3 together.

As mooty said, LSD is nice to have, but if you don't track, or are at your first outings, it's not a big deal.

Yes, coolant fittings are an issue, but you can simply run water wetter and hope for the best.

Get the car, live with her, and you can go from there.

Just know that some of the members here are hard core junkies; we are always upgrading... because we can. Is it all necessary? You can be the judge once you're in

Hey Francois - so I sold the '88 944 Turbo S and bought a 996 GT3 on Thursday. I shouldn't hijack this thread with details, but just saw you here and said yo.

Default Thanks for the Feedback

Thank to all for the feedback. Planning to move ahead, enjoy the car and know I'll end up spending some money to sort it out and make some upgrades. Really what I've done w/my former cars, just want to go in eyes wide open.
