Default OBDII Data Loggers

I have a few data loggers that plug into the OBDII port, PLX Kiwi, Scantool and Durametric They are fine in the garage but in real world driving, each hangs down too far in the driver's foot well.
I kick the plug out with in 500 yards of leaving the pit and it makes for a bad situation with a loose plug floating by my feet. How do others connect this plug?
Do you relocate the OBDII port? Do you have an adapter that connects to the DME?

Thanks.

real racing data loggers like AiM Solo DL connect to CAN bus directly.

I am in a 7.1 GT3, but if the 6 is the same, you can pop out the OBDII socket. I then plug the data unit ito it, tape it together so it does not vibrate apart, and then tape or zip tie it up out of the way.

The socket has two plastic catches on the rear (towards the frunk), one on the front (towards the driver). Small screwdrivers let you release the catches, then push the socket up so that it is loose:

I know the data from the OBDII socket is different (more limited) than hooking up to the CAN bus, at least for the SOLO DL. I did a brief search and found no definitive comparison. What data do you actually get by connecting to the OBDII?

These are my three application for the OBDII port. I cannot compare since I have no knowledge of the CAN bus.

Off the top of my head from the OBD2 connector (and whatever OBD2/emisson protocol is supported (which may or may not be CAN) you can get: vehicle speed; rpm; engine load; intake air temp; coolant temp; MAF; O2 sensor voltages; short term and long term fuel trims; ignition advance, OBD status (open/closed loop); readiness monitor codes; DTCs and a few other things.

Some vehicles support more esoteric data (via higher Mode 1 Pids (parameter Ids) like wide band O2 sensor data; converter temps; oil temp; oil pressure; fuel level; and so on.

Now in some vehicles the OBD2 bus is ISO-9141-2 or KWP2000 while CAN is used for the 'comfort' bus. This was the case with my 08 Cayman S. (In the USA in 08 CAN was supposed to be the standard bus but many automakers asked for and got temp reprieve from having to offer CAN as the OBD2 bus.)

Sincerely,

Macster.
