NEED HELP/ADVICE/OPINIONS 996
Hi, im new to this site and im buying a Porsche very very soon, most likely within the next 2 months. I am buying a 996 but not sure which one i want. I am contemplating between a GT3 or a turbo (not the gt2). if i buy the GT3 i will stroke it to a 3.9 liter and add the parts to officially make it a RS. I usually go to the track at least every 2 weeks and i also do a few runs on the highway with a few friends when the track is closed. Now i love the GT3 but at the same time i want the high horsepower that the turbo offers or has the potential to offer. Most people tell me not to get the turbo because of the horrible turbo lag and the constant problems (not sure if this is true). This is my first Porsche, i have always loved them and now its time to own one. Please dont tell me my first Porsche shouldnt be either a GT3 or a turbo cause ive driven cars that were faster and i have driven a few 997 GT2's. I have owned a 2001 s4 and a 1998 M3, and I feel its time to graduate and treat myself to a Porsche. My friends have a supercharged M3, GTR, M5, superchargered E55, C63 and i want to be able to keep up with them. Please give me your opinions on what would be more suitable for me (car will not be daily driven) Advice and opinions are greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

@jrgordonsenior i do both..i want a car that can have some serious "go" on the streets but at the same time be able to perform on the track. This is probably one the hardest decisions i have ever made relating to cars lol. i LOVEEE the gt3 but i want the beast horsepower that the turbo offers. Do the 996's have bad turbo lag because i know the 997's virtually have almost none.

compared to supra, forced m3 and amg's. the 996 TT has zero lag.
996GT3 is really slow by today's standards. yes i had 8 of them, i know.
TT can get you more hp easier.
stroking to 3.9 is not officially RS. a real RS is 3.6.
a well set up TT can be a ferocious track car and be very fast on street as well.

Just sold 2003 996tt & bought 2005 986 GT3. My motivation was track performance so I moved to the GT3. Sounds like you want the straight line speed to compete with your friends - buy the Turbo. It won't disappoint you on the track - the only things passing you will be GT-Rs & GT3s

@unterbergamotten3 im not going to beat around the bush, even though my two options are the turbo and the gt3, the gt2 is a little out of my price range. I just dont want to regret not buying the wrong car for my preference. When i did say i was going to stroke the gt3 i didnt essentially mean it was going to make it a gt3 rs. I meant i wanted to do the necessary requirements to officially convert it to a gt3 rs and then add the stroker kit from sharkwerk, if i go turbo it will be sent to AMS. these are all moves that will happen much later. Im kind of a noob at this so bare with me guys, just looking for the right Porsche. Sorry if i get annoying.

^^^ Isn't your "can I afford it" math wrong?
I'm pretty sure a GT3 + RS parts + 3.9L will be a lot more expensive than a GT2. And the 3.9L doesn't add much power for the money, less than 100HP. Even 480HP isn't huge compared to the cars you mention in you first post.
My guess... GTR is faster everywhere. GT3 is faster than the others on track (even without 3.9L). GT3 is slower than the others on the street (even with the 3.9L).

the after market parts would happen way later. As for right now im only debating on the tubro or gt3. I cant afford a gt2 right now not even a 996 gt2, and i wish i could afford a gtr cuz that would be the answer to all my problems lol. So i guess it looks like im going 996tt, i just hope i never have problems with the turbos/ and after market turbos eventually. Kinda the only think that gets me nervous.

I see, well under those circumstances, I'd say it's an easy vote for the TT. When I bought my GT3 about 2 years ago, there were highly modded TTs on the market for about the same price as a GT3 with light track mods. But I don't know what the market is like today. Why not buy a car that already has the upgrades you want?
