can anyone chime in... 996TT vs GT2
i've been looking at getting a 996TT but have been seeing really nice low mile GT2 for not alot more $$$$$
what's the diff in driving dynamics ? i'd be wanting to track the car as well as street drive....
i've seen some threads on removing the AWD from the 996TT... would a better route be to "make" a GT2 ? i'm not concerned about originality, etc.
thx

If you remove the FWD from a 996TT, you are still going to have a car without LSD (unless it's a late year with that rare option - and 1 wheel drive would suck with that much torque), with a sunroof (if you need the headroom) and without coilovers and adjustable swaybars. GT2's also have a bit more power with larger turbochargers and come with PCCB's standard (for better or worse).

The 996 GT2 is the better car, but, it has no PSM to save your rear. Think single malt Scotch vs. blended Scotch.

They are completely different car's no matter how you slice... I was a 996 TT owner, with a rare no sunroof optioned car, nice coilover/suspension setup, lightened up a bit, rwd conversion, nice power etc... Guess what? They were still completely different car's from a back to back drive to a stock gt2 and my heavily modded turbo, which was well sorted too..
I am now a GT2 owner (modified and built by RUF) for the past almost 5 year's and it is the most incredible car I have driven, been in, etc... It's not a toy, not for the faint of hear, etc... Usually, if you know it's the car for you, there is NO DEBATE or questions!
I would also question a GT2 for 'not so much more' than a turbo, as turbo's are in the 40's and still a clean no story gt2 is well in the 70's or 80's, the are holding some great value now a day's..

Henry (?), if you are on the fence, will be tracking, and do not need the AWD (obviously, if you are thinking or removing the front drive), then there should be no hesitation. Get the GT2.
It's a special car, and will reward you for driving it well. The TT is just a nice street car (no offence to anyone, it's actually a very nice street car).
Good luck, and please report back.

I'm not a fan of the all wheel drive models. Just not worth the added mass on the street or track. Modifying a street 996 Turbo won't be worth it when you have plenty of 996 GT2 available. You won't get your modification money back on a Turbo.
I vote 996 GT2

gt3 more linear on input/output. more controlled. easier to drive.
gt2 more 'spikey'. need to be good steerer to extract the best from it. needs experienced driver.
gt3 can be modded for a little extra safety and control.
gt2 can be modded to be more wild, and a touch more control.
local track, gt3 does about 1:42
gt2 does about 1:39

But you are right, it starts with "just this little piece", then that one, and then, well I came this far, I should probably also do this, and the first thing you know, bingo... "I shoulda".
Don't worry, we all do it.
