Default Steering Rack Problem?

I have a 996 GT3, there is about a good 5 to 10 degrees of dead spot free play in the steering. When I was cruising on the highway at 75 mph, I held the steering wheel with both hands and the car would pick a slight change of direction and go there depending on the road/wind conditions. It then prompted me to do a slight 5 to 10 degree shake of the steering wheel and there was no change of direction. I was wondering if it could be that the steering rack is shot and needs a rebuild. Anyone else ever have a problem like this?

What's been done before is the car just had a corner balance, I was actually just driving home from that. Also had all the steering components, bushings, control arms, trailing arms checked by two shops.

oh and to add to this, the tire pressures are set correctly. Anyways, the sensation is that it feels like the car is wandering. The higher the speed, the more it does. At the track, above 120 mph, the car feels like it has a mind of its own and is pretty confidence deflating. I road race regionally and I can tell you the front end of the car feels loose

Alignement is 1st to check. My car was already off when bought off showroom floor. What are your alignment specs? Mike

Make sure the steering rack bolts are tight. I've seen many loosen (and a few fall out) The symptoms are exactly what you're describing. At my shop we loctite/torque them as part of regular maintenance

+1^ if you had a corner balance they had to do an alignment and part of that is centering the steering...if they didn't tighten it all down afterward it could just be loose...don't drive it that way

I had free play on my GT3RS wheel - stationary with engine off - the fault was a steering rack bolt loose. Get it checked.
