That is an interesting finding. If that becomes the generally accepted view of the black box's data, I would not be surprised if there will be state laws enacted that would require, upon registration of the vehicle, the data to be available to the authorities.

Hate to be devil's advocate here but I see no problem (i.e., there is no privacy violated) at all with the forensics team using black box data from your car to reconstruct the crime when that crime is at a certain level (i.e., felony). The analogy I would provide would be leaving that data on the black box is the equivalent of leaving your fingerprint at a crime scene.
