I think I used about 3-4 of the rings on my hook when I put it on my GT3. It doesn't require a specific number. I put too many on, took two off and that was that. The rubber bumper will come off. You are right that the hook will hang down without touching the bumper on a GT3, but while the hook doesn't swing loosely, it can be moved, so I put a little bumper pad on the back anyway. I thought that the ones that came with the hook were too small and used slightly larger ones sold for furniture.

Mine was very tight. I thought I had the wrong threads, but was told to just crank on it. They were right. It was made to be tight, and not move. It is a nice piece.

thanks guys..did take a large wrench and lots of elbow grease...got it in...hard to get in but should be hard to steal now..
