Hey, I am thinking of swapping out the Cup shifter and Cables and going to the 997.2 GT3 shifter and stock cables.
I can offer mine at better than the Group rate. Oh yeah, they are 5 months old.

I just recieved my new 997 shifter and cup cables yesterday and will install soon, at the risk of not asking for part numbers are there any other parts I will need?

The Cup shifter is too easy. It is pure racing hardware. I am not the most accurate wih my throws and Cup shifter will let you enter any gear easily.

I think my wallet would be more secure with a more restrictive shift console until my driving improves.

^trust me don't ^go back to stock 996 or 997 cables/box . With my shorter r/p and having to use 5th gear- downshifting can be a real challenge sometimes it goes into 6 and one time it went into 2nd- bye bye pressure plate/clutch like me : (. Mike

In order to correctly and safely install the cup cables with the oem 996 shifters or 997 shifters or 996 cup shifter you need the parts marked with red on the attached diagram:
Some of them are ordinary items and can be fetched outside Porsche. (since their cost is very low just order them together to save time and help your tech do the job)
Note that 2 small 10mm nuts required to secure one stud are NOT in the parts list and must be bought separately.

If you are going to use the cup cables, don’t bother reusing the end tips of the oem shifter by patenting an attachment method, because they are plastic and not up to the job of handling the stronger thicker cup cables, also the point is to remove rubber and plastic for better feel.

1. Shifter 996 424 010 9A
2. Fastener for control cable left 996 424 145 9A *already comes with threaded pin and 2 nuts
3. A. fastener for control cable right / ball socket 900 169 015 02
B. securing clip 900 169 016 02
C. x1 threaded pin 900 228 005 02
D. two M6 thin nuts
4. Cables 996.424.040.75
5. Oval screw for securing item 2 to shifter 999 919 204 09 * oem is a plastic POS that fails see link. Photo of the plastic rivet courtesy of Mikymu. see link

For the strippers, if some of you want to lift the shifter upwards you can buy the extensions and bolts, shown in same diagram, and you also need to buy the retainer and a bolt to secure the cables to shifter. items 15,5 and 13,14.

Note that if you choose to do so, the center console has to go : )

Hope this helps

Best,

^ Funny that. I have the cup setup on the GT3 I just bought, and it's almost the least hard-core aspect of the car.

In my quest, I drove 7.1 GT3 and 6 with SSK (not sure what flavour though). Both were more "notchy"; 6 was absolute riffle, 7 was just tighter (could have been the gearbox).

After reading about how the cup setup was better, I expected super precise and maybe also notchy. Well, no such thing... It just works... I actually lifted the skirt to check out the P/N because it seemed so "normal".

So, no shorter throw for the cup but also, no drama. As Dudley said "it's easy"

John,

Did you have to get part #11 as well (the bracket that holds the cable)... ?

That is the same stock bracket used on the standard shift cables.

I bought the Shifter assembly and the cables. That was it. No other random bits.

John has you all good to go. But to add some ideas and thoughts:

Here are pics of the CMS (California Motorsports) billet unit and 10- GT3(RS) OE shifter which is actually a nice unit. Light in weight and relatively precise. The CMS is not quite ready for the newer model cars (they are tweaking it now), but should work well for 996. The folks at CMS are awesome with customer service. And it is CMS not Cantrell. Cantrell just sells these units.

It could be that for some people a 997.2 shifter with the 996 Cup cables is a good answer. Cables made a hell of a difference in my car. When using OE shifter and Cup cables I drilled a small hole to pass a tie-wrap in order to secure the cable housing end to the shifter. Other wise it can flex there and perhaps even work itself out. Hope this helps

Thanks for clarifying.. (California Motorsports vs. Cantrell)

How does it compare to the stock 997 GT3 shifter? I was told by Cantrell that the CMS shifter is 15% shorter throw compared to the Cup unit, so it should be identical to the 997 GT3 OEM shifter. Can you confirm that?

Not exactly..

The oem 6GT3 bracket 996 424 165 02 can be used but the cup part number 11 that ends with 9A is different than oem GT3 and slightly bigger to accommodate the thicker cup cables. Both can be used but if you r **** get the cup part. : )

Thanks for the info, John.. looks like if you use the CMS shifter, you won't be using that bracket..
