there is a very good DIY on the site. Picture and all. It is pretty easy and you will use less foul language if you remove the cover. Especially if you do not have a lift.

Updating this old thread for the rear bumper removal since I just did it on a 996 GT3...
1. Remove top 4 screws and metal cover (medium Phillips).
2. Remove 3 bottom screws (small Phillips).
3. Remove 2 screws from bottom of each sides (T30).
4. Remove 1 screw from just inside the wheel well (easier with wheel off) for each side (small Phillips). I used a ratchet with a small extension and Phillips bit to avoid removing the wheels.
5. Pull out bumper cover out
6. Disconnect license plate light plugs

I removed the rear bumper this weekend but could do all I needed to without disconnecting the license plate lights. For future reference, however, how do you disconnect the plug #14 in 911Slow's post above? There is a tab on it but neither pushing or pulling made a difference (didnt really force as didnt need to disconnect, so if it is elbow grease just let me know...). TIA!

90007534001 new number for the rear bracket that goes from the bumper to the heat shield.

I got these numbers from the autoatlanta site 996, not the gt3 drawing as they should be the same. Just check the gt3 page and the numbers r the same.
