Default Lip spoiler attachment point questions

Hi,

I picked up a Cup lip spoiler from a member and a bunch of clips from TRG.

It appears the lip is attached with 15 plastic clips. Is that all? I swear I've seen some pics of lip spoilers with Double-sided adhesive...

Also, it seems crazy that the lip spoiler is clipped straight to the bumper with no frame/subframe attachments. That just can't be the most effective thing for downforce. Still, since Porsche did it this way, I presume the design is fine and I just don't understand the details. Can anyone explain?

Thanks.

I tried the double sided tape thing but rocks seemed to find their way in between.
So I just put wide tape in front of lip to close gap and it helps keep lip on if you scrape it some.

...and the splitter isn't to increase downforce up front by forcing down the front of the car via the flimsy splitter, it's by reducing lift by diverting air away from under the car. Subtle difference, but once you wrap your head around it, it will make sense.

Cheers,

Stock lip spoiler has a recessed area to allow 2 sided tape so gap is small between bumper and lip spoiler. Cup spoiler doesnt. Like AllanJ said it's not for downforce just displace air underneath like a diffuser. Mike

If u wanted true downforce the lip will be down to the ground and permanently affixed. Ain't going to happen with a street car. Mike

hey cyrus, nice meeting you the other week. it got pretty exciting when your car started rolling back on my driveway...caught it just in time!

i'll try to grab a picture of the way my cup lip is mounted... Tony's brother Joe Colicchio did the install -- extremely clean and VERY solidly attached. He used a few extra drilled holes with nuts and BOLTS and some heavy duty double-sided tape. pics to follow...

Dudes use a bead of silicon between the lip and bumper, won't come off....unless you have a pretty bad off and it digs in

My cup spoiler has lasted 3 years on my car. It is very chipped up and cracked in a few places and scraped, but still on. You have to wash clean the bumper underside before installing a new spoiler. and wash the top of the spoiler also.
Use soap and water, NOT any cleaner products ie; Armor-all ,Windex, 409 after it is clean, wipe it down with 3M adheasive remover or Goof- Off. The good 3M double sidded tape is a must. If you skip the tape then air will get between it and the bumper cover even on the highway let alone a straightaway at the track. Stick the tape to the top of the spoiler but leave the peal away paper on so it will not stick to the underside of the bumper. Start in the center and install the plastic rivits but do not push the pins until all the rivits are inserted. Then peal the paper and stick the spoiler to the underside of the bumper cover and start pushing in the rivit pins as you go. flying off track under heavy braking when I came into a corner just a little hot is the main way to remove a chin spoiler. Grass grabs and rips it off. Clean it up and reinstall. the little plastic rivits work perfectly. Nuts and Bolts are heavy.

Nuts and bolts are a great way to tear apart your bumper cover.

^^ Same here.

I use black duct tape to cover the gap so no air can get between the splitter and bumper cover.

Thanks all.

@AllanJ: Okay, that makes sense. Splitters I've seen were always mounted to the subframe/frame which is why I was wondering.

@sfbimmer: Thanks for the info. Yeah, I think I pushed some air or something into my brake system. It happened to me again, the car rolled away after like 10 minutes of being parked! So strange. I need to re-bleed...

@va122: Do you mean the standard silicone they glue fish tanks together with? That stuff seems quite weak. Is it applied before clipping the spoiler on? Or is it applied in the crack after?

@spare tire: I've used the 3M double-sided tape and that stuff is insanely strong. Once one lip goes, how do you remove the remaining tape without damaging the bumper? Heat?
