too much motor oil?

I think I have too much too...
What harm will it cause if 1/2 qt to 3/4 too full?

Overfull is bad.
For the 2004-2005 996 GT3 after oil filter change and draining for 40 minutes, I recommend refilling with 8.75 quarts to begin with. Drive and check oil level topping off in small amounts if necessary. On this model GT3 you have electric oil level gauge and dipstick. It is hard to see the fresh oil on the dipstick.

Now, if you overfill, you can empty from the case which will have the small amount of oil than the tank.

Yes, it's very hard to see clean oil on the dipstick.
I primarily use the electric gauge to tell me if it's ok to rev the motor. If I autox or about to go on the track, I turn on the oil level thing. If the engine is not up to temp, then the computer will say so because you can only check the oil level when it's warm. Only 4k rpm until it's warmed up!

dilemma...
Just had my oil changed... when I got home, I ran the electronic measurement and it reads all the way to the max bar, sometimes one bar over. Then, I measured using the dipstick, and it appears to be just barely at the minimum marker. I assume trust the dipstick more than the electronic measurement?
First I was worried about being a little overfilled based on the electronic measure, now I'm worried I'm just barely at the minimum...
BTW, to read the dipstick, when I pulled it out, I touched it to an absorbent paper towel and saw where the oil blotted, like how Mike suggested. With clean oil, it's hard to tell where the oil is on the dipstick, but it's easy to see where it soaks more heavily into the paper towel.
