i need to run a vin.
how do i get access to carfax? do i need to be a dealer?
sorry never done this solo before.

I did one a week ago. Just create an account at carfax.com and enter the VIN. It cost me around $40 for a single VIN, one-time check.

Also consider asking your insurance carrier to run a VIN check. Sometimes people repair cars on their own dime and nothing gets reported to carfax - but incidents with a car might still show up in the insurance database. Just another round of protection.

i know that carfax isn't very useful for "accident" reporting, but i wanted ownership history.
