I cant believe I have to defend GT3's on a GT3 forum... but here are some numbers for you to ponder.
16956 is the production numbers of what GM considers their limited production 2009 Corvette
Ferrari built a record 4595 cars in 1991 to meet the seemingly insatiable demand for the red cars. Then, as a reaction to the Asian meltdown and a global tightening of money, demand virtually disappeared. Ferrari built a limited production run (their words) of 2289 cars in 1993. This year, Maranello is on target to dispatch 6500 cars -- an 11-percent increase over a few years ago in 2005.
Aston Martin? The limited production DB9 could allow for approximately five thousand units per year
Porsche? Limited production 1973 Carrera RS? 1636
Originally planned as a limited production run of 1000 (quoting Porsche), the exotic 3.0 "Turbo" featured advanced technology borrowed from the automaker's racing experience. Production of the 3.0 turbo? 2876
Fast forward: 4322 normal 911 turbo's built in 2003 alone.
The 997 is the most commercially successful 911 of all time, having sold 100,000 units between its introduction in 2004 and July of 2007.
The 996 GT3? 1000? (maybe 500 good ones left?) Yep, I would say limited. But you can say what you would like.

Thanks for the valuable input everyone. No need to defend the GT3 at all, I agree, great car, and yes limited numbers here in NA. Not sure how many 997 GT3's were made, but certainly more.
As for appreciation, I do believe these cars will eventually come back up in value, but not for some time yet. The 73 RS was flat for many, many years untill the world stood up and took notice. Same with the European 964 and 993 RS cars. They have enjoyed an enormous rise in value over the past 3 years or so, and there were certainly more of those cars made, this more than 15 years later. Maybe there's a point in the car world that great models hit their stride, value wise 15-20 years from initial release maybe????
In any case, it's about deciding between two fantastic models of an iconic brand. The passion for the GT3 is obvious here on these boards.

haha, speaking of limited edition (tongue in cheek), when .1 RS showed up we all thought it's rare. then we nor cal RS guys gathered at a dinner, we have TEN RS parked together in one drive way....

The bubble wrap is hilarious. 
But... Sorry guys... 125 units is low - but its n o t h i n g boys. My personal Ferrari is one of 43. And only one of 1 in its color. And you can joke about the bubble wrap or parking in the living room (funny stuff) but I think you all know that I drive all of my cars, as they were intended to be, sometimes harder, but in-turn cherish them perhaps more than the next guy. I do appreciate the banter tho' - And I have a new found respect for limited stuffed animals.

They are going to build considerably more than 125. My 3 local dealers have 11 allocations between. One that got zero 997.2 GT3 allocations, got 2 RS allocations. One of the others who had initially 5 997.2 GT3 allocations (they got 2 addtional cars on top of these), got 5 RS allocations. Expect production to be closer to 500 for the US alone.
