Default Oil Leak

Currently looking at an 04 GT3 w/7000 miles and the shop doing the PPI took the following photos. Does this look like a typical RMS leak?

Appreciate your feedback.

Actually, it looks like somebody didn't put the oil drain screw back on properly (e.g., loose or wrong/missing washer) and oil has leaked out slowly. Some of the change in location could be to airflow blowing the small drips of oil.

ps. please use smaller res photos.

Agree w Dell. My drain plug once got slightly loose and dripped small puddles of oil and flowed along the lower case halves like that. Could it be a bigger leak? Yes, but this could be minor. Have them check the drain plug and clean it up and see what happens. Kyle

Is it leaking like actually there's a drip? The RMS in my old GT3 dripped a very small amount over the summer when the car was not driven for some time but it cleared with some more regular use. I think the seals can dry out a bit if the car isn't driven much.

I haven't seen the car in person but the shop that performed the ppi thought the rms was the likely culprit especially considering there being such little use. It's also possible, as others suggested that a loose drain plug had caused the oil to weep. Thanks everyone for the input. -Randy

to me, it looks a lot like a RMS leak... tell tale is looking at the drip on the triangular piece behind the rear sway bar... where the case is connected with the trans... enough oil has leaked from the RMS and blow on to the lower case while driving... best thing to do is to clean the entire area and drive the car and check to see if oil is dripping from the triangular piece after each drive... I bet that is where the oil is coming from....

Yes it would. My understanding is that the RMS on these cars need the vacuum and heat created in the case (through normal use) or they will leak. What I do not know is if the situation would improve if the car were driven more frequently.

hey ron, my understanding is that once it starts the only way to stop is either run out of oil or replace the seal.. is the 73 in for the winter?

Agree on having them check the drain plug and then use a rag and dab the main oil accumulation areas. Do a test drive and recheck. If it is only seaping a little oil (small drip) leave it alone and negotiate price accordingly.
