Used GT3 Suspension
Morning all-
I have a '99 996 C4 Aero. I'm looking at upgrading the stock suspension to M030 or X74.
It was suggested I post here, the question if any of you GT3'rs have your stock suspension sitting in your garage collecting dust after you upgraded to Motons.
Thanks in advance to your replies.
Pete

Hi Pete,
I do but am in the UK. Springs and dampers with working height adjusters (they often seize) off my 20,000 mile 2005 996 GT3 mk2. Bilstein will rebuild (revalve, regas etc) them for around £80 a corner in the UK - and they must offer a similar service in the US. £200 plus whatever shipping you arrange if you are interested.
Cheers
Mark

You might want to contact GMG in Orange County, CA. They do a lot of suspension upgrades and may have stock parts lying around.

I would suggest you go with X74. The GT3 suspension will require additional pieces to work correctly on your C2 such as different (custom) drop links. Most of the used suspension kits are going to be missing the front "strut mounts" as well, since the GT3 guys tend to keep these to use on their next coil overs.
I would buy a new x74 suspension kit, which appears to be a more elegant drop in solution for your car, however I have no first hand experience with them. I do have first hand experience w/the GT3 set up, and though it's a decent set up, I'd go with a factory kit if I were doing it over. If you just have to have the GT3 set up, if you buy a used set, I'd consider having them rebuilt. I've seen many of the shocks leak with low mileage.

^you don't need new drop links to use GT3 suspension. The stock 996 link that is also used as a pinch bolt for the carrier can be retained. You will need adjustable 996 links only if you use GT3 sways. You might like the generalize owners who sell incomplete GT3 suspension but mine needs nothing.
If interested, PM me.

Well both the MO30 and the X74 come with sway bars, so though you don't need adjustable drop links to run GT3 coil overs, like you said they are necessary to run GT3 coil overs with matching GT3 sway bars. There's also the argument of what happens to the effective sway bar rate when you move the point at which the sway bar acts from the shock body (as on a GT3) to the spindle collar (as on *most* GT3 coil overs running on a C2).
I was very happy with the way my car drove after the GT3 suspension swap, just think X74 may work better...

Why on earth would you need "special' drop links when you have A) a gt3 coilover and B) a GT3 sway bar?
The stock non adjustable GT3 drop link works the exact same way on the C2 as it did when it was connecting part A and B when it was sitting on a GT3
You could use the pinch bolt location but why? when you have the GT3 droplink connector threaded onto the coilover itself.

This is incredibly innacurate.
Take a really close look at the geometry again. I don't think you are getting how a drop link works.
There is a potential for swaybar bind at full lock unless the drop links are long enough due to the angle change when using the pinch bolt but changing the effective rate? Did I just make the sway bar longer and flexier or shorter in stiffer in any way?

If you swap the entire coil over assembly, along with sway bar mounts, drop links and the sway bars themselves from a GT3 over to a C2, the only other thing you have to worry about is the pinch bolt on the spindle, in this case everything's fine. I should note that I've dealt with 3 used sets, and never one that's entirely complete. Piecing together a complete set up new would be cost prohibitive, but that's subjective.
Anyway, I've also seen several set ups, where people will swap the coil overs, but will use the C2 spindle mount for the attachment point of the sway bar drop link, in which case the drop link acts on the suspension at a different point, and the drop link itself forms a different angle (not parallel to the coil over assembly), in this case it seems to me that the effective sway bar rate would be different indeed.
My point was that he can buy the X74 kit (or MO30 for that matter), and drop everything in for a lower cost, and for a more straight forward swap, and that's what I would recommend...
