Need a new battery
Hi all-
I have searched the topic and am more confused now than I was before. Need a new replacement battery for my 04 GT3. Don't want to make any mods just drop a new one in. I was all prepared to get something basic (Interstate, Diehard, etc.) but am confused about two things. 1) Is it true that that the original Moll battery is smaller and lighter than a regular 996 battery (Type 47). 2) Do I need to get a battery with reverse polarity.
Also as an aside I was interested in the Optima battery but I believe they need a new type of bracket to properly install. Is that true?
Thanks for any assistance in advance.
Chet

I recently installed an "Everstart Maxx" 48N in my '04 GT3. The next bigger size, which I think you're referring to, is also listed for the 996and fits in the tray, but there is not a threaded hole properly spaced in the tray to bolt it down. Battery was from Wally World and has a 3 year warranty. It's around 11" wide.
Optima, or Oddysey (would be my choice for a lighter weight battery), would need an adapter of some sort. I just installed one in an '09 Cayman S using a Rennline bracket that was a bit expensive, but very nice.
Hope that helps,
Joe

I was able to get a new Moll 70 amp (OEM) from my local dealer for $185. Was lead to believe they were charging close to $300. Not exactly cheapest option but easiest.
Thanks.

There's a thread in the 996 Turbo forum right now regarding batteries. Depending on year, AutoZone offers 2 sizes, DL-48 (small) and DL-49 (large). I put the larger DL-49 in mine and it fit the battery tray just fine (my battery tray has threaded holes for both sizes). Cost me around $90 after core exchange.

Costco size 47 is a drop in replacement for under $60:

Interstate battery was plug and play, no mods needed. Don't know about weight but it felt about the same as stock...darn heavy! As I understand it though, these are much stronger and more durable than stock.
