Vic, when I was out there last month my hot lap timer was not working, but I did have a Trackmate for a few laps as part of the Gorman Motorsports sponsorship of the DE/Club race weekend. I have a lot of excuses, like I had a student on board, it was 107 degrees, full fuel tank etc, but worst of all, my attention was diverted when I noticed the corners workers tracking my car as I went by each of their stations -- one with a black flag in hand, but never threw it. Apparently they heard something on my car that wasn't right. My right front brake pads was metal to metal and my front lefts had no evidence of any brake pads, but rather metal backing to rotor. Brakes and motor mounts were going out left and right that weekend because of the extreme heat.

All that said, I put in a 2:14.6 on nittos... Shame I know. I asked Joe C. in Dell's old GT3 what times he was putting in, but he was not running time all weekend. An A student in a GMG 996 GT3 was running 2:21s, but he might have been on street tires.

I don't know the last time you were there, but there is a lot of new patch work and people were saying that the track was more slippery than normal.

The club racers were running the same configuration, but w/out the bus stop, so their times would NOT be comparable because they were running the back straight from Cotton Corners to Riverside.

So Victor, how much would stiffer springs and shocks help my times?

+1 I'm curious too.

At my local track I'm now down to mid 1:16's. Most of the progress I've made has been through coaching. Next after that would be tires. When I get Motons over the winter, I'm only expecting to drop another second or so. I'm not expecting much. What I'm after is a more stable car that will instill more confidence in me and that will bring down the lap times a bit.

....at least that's the plan.

Cheers,

MJB I'm running similar camber settings with Nittos; a bit more in the front at -2.9. I have found that 38 rear and 37 front are the pressures that work for me. The tire is definitely "off" below 36 and above 39. Wear is quite even although it looks like the fronts could use a touch more camber. The car pushes very slightly but still rotates very well especially with the toe out in the front. I found the setup very susceptible to rear toe settings. I run 3mm total rear toe dead even on both sides.

I asked a couple of P car mechanics if these shocks "wear out" and needs to be serviced, but they said, "no". I'm at 22k miles and as Victor will attest to, I've felt that I'm getting more dive up front under braking and more side to side roll.

Despite what these mechanics have said, I really believe that they should be serviced and re-valved.

I'm feeling the same way about my shocks at 24k miles. IMO they are feeling a bit soft although the handling remains solid and predictable and lap times are still fast.

24k miles on mine and usually the car feels good. It's just with real sticky tires and a few places on different tracks where the worn shocks show themselves and really annoys me.

I agree Allan. It's on certain courses or parts of courses where it's quite evident and annoying. I know what 9.5 is saying when he mentioned that you have to wait to get on the gas because of the roll.

My other thought was that it could be that the faster you get, the more roll your going to experience, but given what everyone else is experiencing, it's probably the shocks that need to be maintained.

Still no answer on the "how much faster" though. 2 sec. with shocks and springs?

At Sebring Moton CS and 550/700# springs were worth 2.5 sec. This was on street tires, Michelin PS2's

Sebring is a 3.7 mile 17 turn road course? 2.5 seconds on springs and Motons is a decent improvement.

Thanks for the imput guys. I've decided to definitely go with stiffer springs and revalved shocks, but can't afford the Motons or JRZs.

Aside from Gold 85s opinion, what spring rates front and rear should I go with considering Motons/JRZ are not in the mix?

Get the stock shocks revalved and/or add an external canister and/or add rebound adjustment. All can be done with the stock Bilsteins. My 2 cents.

That's pretty soft, did you go stiffer?? I am at like 550-750 and want to go stiffer, although since Victor dialed my car in for me nicely the car got VERY STIFF all of a sudden, not necessary? Been contemplating it lol

As for the OP, when you are ready to move up, do a complete setup as others have mentioned, the results/confidence of driving at the car's and your potential is priceless at that point!

ok do yourself a favor go to a good speed shop who work on the 996 gt3 and let them revalve the shockes springs and definitely change the engine mounts..the 996 is notorious for crashing because its to much of a set up for the street....thast why guys are flying and you feel all kind of movement...also...Your ride will still be great on the street...I basicly have a supercup car that I drive everyday and to the track..and people are amazed how great the ride is....Smooth
