In case you have not followed VW much, I suggest you wait until the R20T comes out. I have given the R32 some thoughts and driven couple friends' R32, awesome car but DSG is just not for me. The R20T is supposed to have both transmissions available and for about the price of an used R32. It is supposed to have closed to 300hp!

for now, I am.
I never got up to Bellingham to test drive it and started doing more homework... not for me.
The new GTI will be better than the last version of the R32
Plus the link that Wilfred posted... nice if the USA gets that.

The M5 is great. I would not let it go easily... and I appreciate the input from all of you.

for now she is staying put...

I do have my eye on a 94 3.6 Turbo that I cannot afford though :-)

I'd wait for the VW R20. It is basically Audi TTs on VW golf body.

BorgWarner K04 turbo + Haldex AWD + ECU Tuning = 300+ HP of madness

Love to know what they meant by "slight premium over the standard GTI model." For me, as long as they have the manual and under $30k, that will be an awesome DD for me as my current DD lease runs out next year...

I've been back and forth thinking about the A3 TDI, 2010 GTi or 2008 R32 as well. can't exactly commute in the CGT/RS/TT all the time and if my gf (flavor of the week lol) needs to borrow the car I'd rather have her drive that than my f250 (last gf scraped the side trying to park it underground)

those little hatches are pretty awesome.

The Mark IV R32 was the definitive car (6 speed only), owned one as well as the M5 (and a few other cars).

I kept comparing my M5 with my Porsche TT, and finished up selling them both to buy a GT2; neither car was that satisfying and their "limits" were limiting!.

The R32 (Mark IV) is a fantastic daily driver, around town, because it delivers its available power in a useful and usable band for "light to light" driving, and stuck like glue in the twisties. You could use it in a fun way.

With lots of useable space and an AWD that is good in inclement weather, this is a car that was worth all the money, and to me represented one of the automotive bargains of all time.

Like i said, the Mark V did away with the 6 Speed, cut down on useable space and was generally boring. I didn't like the DSG (but I love PDK..go figure!), so in my book it was a car that traded on the predecessor's reputation. Haven't we seen that before?

I always felt the M5 was heavy and had weak brakes, so it was more of fast cruiser than a performance car. Long drives it was great but on an autocross course..an absolute waste...I think you get the idea..

As always, it is horses for courses.

Hope this helps!

Pogue...

your thought on the mk4 vs the mk5 are spot on what I have been hearing from VW enthusiats...
the mk 4 R32 was something special in comparison to the mk4 gti -- it offered a host of upgrades (brakes, larger wheels, etc etc) over the gti at the time
The mk5 r32 has the goods as well BUT the mk5 gti ALSO had all of the improvements that that the mk4gti did not... so the gap between the mk4 R32 and mk4 gti is quite large and the gap between the mk5 r32 and the mk5 gti is not very big -- in fact the mk5 gti is quicker because it is lighter as it does not have awd...

I am doing nothing... I will sell my M5 and sit on the money and dd my f150 until I know what to do...
