Trickle Charger

I am using Porsche old style trickle charger on GT3- On my old 930 charge was constant all the time- plugged into cigarette lighter. 24 hr. light on charger was on. On 04 GT3 it goes off? When I open door it goes back on. Shuts off by itself a short time later- This does not seem correct based on my experience with old 930. Any insight? I don't think it is smart enough to come back on when needed since it was constant on 930. Is there some timer on system cutting input to cigarette lighter that shuts off power flow?

Mine never shuts off. Once I plug it in, the light on the unit stays lit. But it may not be an "old style" as I've had it since 2005. (Nice SY car, BTW!)

To my knowledge there is no event/timer shut off on the cigarette lighter port in the 996 GT3. The courtesy light ring around the lighter is on an event/timer program. I use a CTEK Multi US 3300 battery maintainer and it cycles properly indefinitely.

I recommend using the battery maintainer I listed above. It is the one Porsche AG sells with their logo. Many Rennlisters use this same model. It is worth it for the battery and the peace of mind (safety in charging the battery correctly).
The CTEK body does get warm during heavy charging cycles, so it is best to place it on something suitable outside of the car, run the wire through the window openning and plug it into the lighter receptacle.

CTEK all the way (or the Porsche labeled CTEK
). I have one on each of the 3 cars in my garage that rarely get out. Never ONCE had anything less than a full charge. Has a fantastic maintenance mode as well as a winter storage mode.

I seem to recall that the car's system senses when the car is occupied by whether a door is open or not. If the door is open, does the system shut down certain electrical circuits to avoid draining the battery? If this is true, it might also explain why I have been instructed to close the door when the charger is plugged in. I have been concerned about mashing the wire or deforming the weather seal. Anybody have any thouhgts on this issue?

I have a float charger that hooks right up to the battery and it works great. I had a Porsche brand for my 911TT and did not like it as well.
Anything that keeps a battery charged up and not overcharged, is always a good idea.

Hooked up to battery means keeping front hood open or crimping wire when closed- I'm more comfortable with thru window. I'll probably just purchase new charger to be sure. Remember the Mice !

If you buy a real Battery Tender and use the leads that permanently stay on the battery terminal, you then run the wire outside the rubber, down the side and out by the headlight. The trunk is sealed, the door and window stay closed and you can alarm the car. I did it to that car with no problem.
