Default Harness install/DIY

Hi,

I am looking for a DIY on installing factory/schroth harnesses in my car

I have the harnesses and sub bars, but need a good DIY to answer some questions like:

- do i need to disconnect battery before I start? Or is keeping key out of ignition enough?
- Are the screws to mount the sub bar already on the bottom of the seat or do I need to head to hardware store?
- what is proper torque for sub bar, seat mount torx bolts, etc?
- Who sells Brey Krause lowering mounts?

Anyone in the city who has done this and can help out- I pay in beer!

Thanks

Disconnect battery? Yes.
Screws on rail? Yes.
Torque? Good and hand tightened.
BK items? TRG maybe since they are up the road from you.

Thanks Dell

I'm going to go unplug the battery and pull out the passenger seat for a look

Backmarker, you might check with Josh (Porsche917K) he just installed his and it is prob. fresh in his mind.
If I recall, a couple of those sub bar bolts were hard to get at, even with the seat on the work bench.
Keep a beer close by!

Just take the seat OFF the slider and rails (just 2 bolts a side). Makes the job much easier!

I've done this job 4 times, and have never disconnected the battery. Just keep the key locked away. If you need help, bring the car down to Half Moon Bay, and we'll have it done in no time. And I don't drink, so a burger would be fine.

There is a good DIY in the DIY section here regarding the Euro seats but it doesn't have much info on the harnesses themselves.

If u don't have a fire extinguisher it's a good time to install while seats are off. Mike

Triple check how you wrap the belts around the bars. Here are the instructions for the Schroth harnesses. The factory setup is a version of the Profi II-6.

http://www.hmsmotorsport.com/docs/Co...structions.pdf

One of my instructors is a safety nut and he pulled the seat cushion to look at how my sub belts were wrapped as well as the shoulder straps. He gave me the thumbs up and commented on how many he found were installed incorrectly, even by shops!

Cheers,

I installed the passenger side harness, seemed straightforward except for one thing

The harness came with one of these at the end of each anti-sub belt. i couldn't find anywhere to clip them, what am I missing?

Yes this was the case for me, made it much easier although the one side requires a box wrench as a socket won't fit

You remove those pieces and then route them over the sub bar the way you would do a shoulder harness over a rollbar. Those clips are if you have eye bolts mounted to the chassis under your seat instead.

Thanks again. No eye bolts but I did route them as per the manual, looks like I'm all set on that side.

If I have time I will take pics while I do driver side and make this thread a DIY for others

Do what Dell said. I learned about this from reading Dell's experiences and also learned about a different style of clip that may be required from Austin and Dell's posts.

If you have the regular Schroth harnesses, then they will come with a "D" clip (aka 2-bar slide). The "D" clip needs lots of harness material to do a proper wrap and I couldn't make it work comfortably. The "E" clip (aka 3-bar slide) doesn't need as much material to wrap and works much better with the factory sub belt bar. I ordered some E-clips from HMS Motorsports.

You'll find the 3-bar slides here for the 2" sub belt (part no LV10)
http://www.hmsmotorsport.com/store/s...are/bar-slides

What end fittings do you have on your lap belts? Bolt on? Clip on?

The factory fitting will bolt to the seat.

If they are clip on then you'll need something to clip them onto. For a few options, check the archives. I used a BK mount for the inner lap belt and the eye bolt on my aftermarket roll bar for the outer mount.

Cheers,
