Does anybody torque the bolt running through the top/back of the caliper to spec?

No spring plates at ANY corner. Not only is it well, it is better for the brakes.

Have to warn you though that the brake chatter will be loud and create staring from onlookers

Curious, why is that?

no drag on the rotor. the spring plate can hold the pad slightly against the rotor.

makes sense. do you also get some chatter/rattle from the pads when driving around over bumpy roads, without brakes depressed?

actually, i can recall... a while back i sat there in the garage and deliberated with myself whether or not the plate was needed. now i know, thanks!

Bumpy roads? You assume the GT3 saw the city streets?

The easy cure for the loud sounds of brakes with onlookers is the lightly drag the brake pedal!

Well, maybe so, but I don't think it is necessarily worse for the brakes since Porsche designed it this way. In any case, we go through pads and rotors at a pretty fast clip so I figure that affect would be negligible on wear, and certainly won't affect performance.
I will give you that the spring clips/retainers are a PITA at times when changing pads and it doesn't hurt to leave them out which I've done before. As you mention they do tend to rattle a bit over bumps and what not. I use the springs these days just to eliminate the rattling and clanking on the street, since I occasionally drive on some of the worst roads in the civilized world here in California. Maybe if we get anything out of Obama when it's all said and done at least the roads in the U.S. will be smooth and GT3 friendly....

Mike, not maybe, it is better. The spring clip was not designed for track duty.

Remember, I am talking track not DD for the brakes and no this is not my revelation, this is the way the race teams run the brakes.

While I do not consider myself an Obama or McCain supportor, can you explain to me why the need to drop the politicos into a brake pad discussion?

Just a riff on the bad road statement which is slightly relevant to the spring in or out discussion as it pertains to dual use (track + street) GT3s. I understand race cars don't use them and certainly wouldn't leave them in if I had a track only car, if only that they are a PITA when replacing pads.

But take it easy man, I don't think there was any danger of seriously sending the thread careening OT. Just a little color... and by RL standards hardly egregious IMO.

No need to "take it easy"....I just asked a simple question. My question was based on the growing trend here on RL. Just gets to be downright comical the number of people here on RL that feel the need to drop an Obama or Bush bomb whenever the subject matter remotely ties together. Maybe I just don't understand since I don't consider myself a hardcore Donkey or Elephant.
