Default OT: DIY, Stripped threads

Hi

Looked at the DIY forums, and I guess they're closed as I'm not allowed to post there. I have a problem with my mother-in-law's car's transmission pan. It's leaking a little, and I discovered that two of the bolts will not seat. The bolts are M8x16, pitch 1.25.

How to repair? Longer bolt? Tap to what? Any other suggestions?

Thanks

You should try tapping to current size/pitch first. I have done this and repaired the existing threads so that the bolt would seat.

Next would be drilling out the hole and either tapping up one size or using a thread insert (heli-coil) which brings you back to the original size.

There is plenty of info if you do an internet search.

I did, and found essentially what you suggest. Thanks

After a DIY on my Recaros I was the proud owner of a Tap and Die set. Good luck to you, from one stripper to another.

Now that you mention it, I think I have a set somewhere in my stash. If not, probably a good idea to get one.
