porsche makes an OEM rack.
i "think" they also make a shallow but wide "wire basket" that can be attached to the rack. anyone has that part number and/or pix?

Are you talking about the one that Joe G. rolled up with at the GGR event?

Mooty,
I bought a roof rack, I almost bought the basket, I sold the roof rack.
The roof rack alone is quite painful to install and remove. You need an Allen key, it can be done in 15-30 minutes (30-60 minutes round trip).
The Basket is too complicated to install and remove, that's why I passed.
You can fabricate two carbon fiber blades perpendicular to the rack, and tires can rest there. Use lots of straps (motorcycle ones are good). You need lightweight wheels to be able to put 4 on the top. 3 is fine even with stock wheels/tires.
I quit the idea, and instead I started to pursue the mini-trailer idea. It gets stored standing up, and it weighs nothing (less than an average wife, more than an average girlfriend). The trailer hitch is already available for the 996/997, these cars can pull 500 lbs.
Here is the link to the mini trailer. Per my measurements, 4 fat tires/wheels fit, 2 on the front, 2 on the back, aligned with the trailer wheels. There are other trailers available.

I have the roof rack, but not the basket. It doesn't take more than 10 minutes to bolt the bars to the roof (and that's being careful). It would be easy to have a basket fabbed up. The instructions say "Maximum useful load: 75kg"

I have a tire trailer and removable hitch. The receiver is behind the plate and the hitch comes off. Weighs nothing. I have a trailex that carries TWO sets of tires and a tool box. Don't notice it at all cruising at 85-90. Makes packing up a LOT easier. The roof rack can be dangerous in the event of an accident. Those tires on the roof become ballistic missiles.
The trailer alone weighs less than 200 pounds and the GT3 pulls it with two sets of tires easily. I LOVE it.. With one set I don't know its there. With two sets, just barely.
The plate flips up and I mount the hitch. Take the trailer off, remove the hitch and flip the plate down. Nothing to see. The heaviest part is the hitch itself which comes off.
Here is what the hitch looks like. It was made by willwoodsystems.com:
And the car with trailer attached (only one set of tires on board)

Dan that is a sweet setup. Definitely a high quality trailer.
Do you mind sharing what the estimated trailer price? Does it come with that tool box? What about those bars to attach the straps, did they come with the Trailex?
Thanks.
