congratulation Kevin.

The BMW made a great step forward and the car's handling is very good. M3 is better multi-use car than GT3. But the more compromise the less unique
I bought this year BMW 5 diesel and I can drive much faster than my GT3 in daily drive but the point of using GT3 lais somewhere else.

ex: no I would not do that. I just took a test drive. I have had BMW in the past and I did like them a lot. I will never have a track car with the motor in front.

Mouse: yes the V8 M in the 135 body and call it the M1

Honestly; why not! The V8 is lighter than the S54 I6 any way...
But I will have a problem if the car is going to be called "M1"...

I have a confession to make. I sold the 04 GT3 and bought an 08 BMW M3.

My intent is, just like when I purchased the GT3 over my Z06 - to share my experience, thoughts, and car passion with everyone here. I don't want to threaten anyone with heresy about their GT3 - after all this is a GT3 forum.

That said - read on as I comment on my newest car.

Alpine White Coupe
4.0 Liter 8 cylinder 414hp engine
0-60 4.1 seconds.
Cold Weather Package
Premium Package
Tech Package
19" Rims
Manual
Clear Bra
Huper Optik Window Tint (Drea)

Just as when I purchased the GT3, over my Corvette Z06 - I was looking for a few things.

1) I don't trust/want to deal with after market extended warranties. Been there done that. it's a nightmare.
2) Warranty was up on my 04 GT3 in July.
3) I needed something more practical in that it could transport my 6 year old son safely.

After looking for about a year casually, I saw the M3 - and something about it peaked my interest.

Here's my comments so far.

We all know what the GT3 excels at, so I'll skip praising the GT3 for all of us GT3 Pilots. Here's what the BMW M3 in my opinion does well.

1) Comfort - I'd forgotten what a comfortable ride was like.
2) Sound system - kicks some major rear end.

Ok - we're all really here for the driving experience, so I can here everyone screaming - Ok fine Kevin - how does it drive.

1) It IS fast. It's pretty darn near close to 996 GT3 fast in a straight line. I would be tempted to say that it's equal.
2) The gear box is well done. Easy to work, and easy to shift. The clutch is light, but has good feel. Better than other BMW series that I have driven.
3) Steering is well done, with options for light or heavy. I usually drive with the heavy option as it's more connected feeling.
4) The car turns well.
5) It is fun.

It gets horrendous gas mileage. 16.4 mpg right now for me. The GT3 hovered around 19mpg.

And for us US owners we get 4 years and 50k miles of free service including the brake pads, oil, clutch, engine, everything. It's all included. Everything. I think the only thing that BMW is saying I can't do is actually race it in an "official" racing event. Other than that, I am welcome to drive it as I see fit, and have BMW take care of the incidentals.

As others have said compared to the GT3 this car is kinda like going to the symphony with earmuffs on. BUT most any car you compare the GT3 to is going to have that comparison. The GT3 *IS* a raw, direct infusion of driving passion.

But I gotta tell you guys - I can't help but grinning when I put M mode on, slam the throttle, start scribbling with the asphault crayons, and lay chripies as I shift. And I get to have my music, comfort as well!

For me - it's a good change in order to have a car that thrills and fits my families needs.

Yes I will miss the GT3 during those events/times when I can open up the can of GT3 whip ***. Because the GT3 did/does it so damn well.

I won't miss it for driving my wife and son all in one car with me. I won't miss it when I need to put stuff in the trunk and take a road trip. And I certainly won't miss it while I listen to the great sound system while I drive around.

Strangely enough - I have been "stopped" more in the past three weeks with the M3 than I have in 1 year with the GT3. Not sure why this is - whether because the 08 M3 is so new and lots of people know about it. Most of the people that have stopped me seem to be very knowledgeable about the BMW mark.

Usually when I'd get stopped with the GT3 - it'd be people just admiring the car and liking it. "Nice Porsche, What kind is it?". With the M3 I get "Wow- that's my dream car - is it the DCT or the Manual?"

For me - I have experienced the pinnacle of street cars pushed to handle at all costs. And I now have gone another direction with another legendary car.

A fellow Car Nut,

Kevin
Basically I am in the same boat, for the same reasons.....kid, etc, etc. I have an E90 M3 (sedan) on order as a replacement (yeah, it aint really a "replacement"--nothing could be) for the GT3. I have owned two other M3's and like the cars for what they are...so, sometime in July, mine will be delivered. Soon, the GT3 goes up for sale....it will be a sad day, but it is time for me to make the move.

iLLM3 - thanks for the kudo's.

I am missing the GT3 much less than I thought I would. I know - heresy. But the stereo, comfortable ride, and other "features" are just so nice. Sat Stereo rocks.

The M3 is slower than the GT3. I think I'd give it a realistic 4.5 sec 0-60. It's a low torque engine - I am kinda disapointed at how low torque it is. But it does still pull, and it redlines right where the GT3 does at around 8,400 RPM.

The 8 cylinder engine sounds ever so much better than the GT3 at idle. Come on guys- I hate to say it but the GT3 at idle sounds like a VW bug. I don't want to offend - but it does. An 8 cylinder just by definition sounds better. At least to my ear.

Of course, the GT3 corners like a scalpel - the M3, by comparison, corners very well, for what it is. Nothing like the GT3. But great for a coupe/sedan 4 seat car!

The one thing I don't like is every so often when clutching, and letting the clutch up, I feel something tick, bump, pull in all the pedals. Kinda like the whole pedal affair is attached. I think it *MIGHT* be the floor mat catching the clutch pedal, and then riding up and tapping, hitting the other pedals - but I have not nailed it down yet.

For me - the luxery of the M3 compared to the GT3 is just too seductive to pass up. My *** is comfortable, my ears are SO much happier listening to my integrated ipod, Sat Radio, or FM/AM Radio or CD.

Will I miss the GTon whole. No. Will I miss the GT3 on the track - ****in A I will. The GT3 is just a brilliant, amazing, beautiful car to drive at 100%. Less than 100% - the M3 beats it hands down.

Some of you, perhaps most, drive the GT3 to 100% every day. For you the GT3 will never bow down to the M3. For me - driving to work, driving the wife and son - the M3 works so much better. And still gives me the ability to dive into Racing land.

Sorry guys- I know your going to kill me. But When I came here from my Z06, and my 1992 corvette, I was up front about it. I gotta share my 2 cents on how I feel abou the M3 vs GT3.

I hope all can respect it.

sure can: for me it is a perfect addition. I just wish there was a way to make the clutch feel stiffer.

Perfect addition is right, not replacement! In a perfect world you have both

The m3 is get in and go anywhere and have so much fun while doing it, its just such a useable car, I find myself missing that in a car so much, why I will get another since my m5 isn't thrilling me really like I thought it would.

But for fun? When you hop into a gt2/3 oh boy, but thats the thing you can't just cruise around in them!

Put some viagra in the master cylinder? Seriously though Gordo, you're right. It's no Gt3 replacement. I own 2 Porsches; I sell another high end German Brand. I wouldn't have it any other way. Just don't tell my boss.

Need more garage space first. For now, a case of 1997 Stag's Leap Cabernet would be awesome. Have a great trip!
