Default Foreign registered car in the US?

A couple of us are thinking of doing an epic FlyDrive holiday next year... visiting California for some touring and also to drive the Corkscrew at Laguna! But instead of just flying and renting, we're keen to fly the cars across and drive them there. Does anyone know what the rules are on driving a foreign registered car over in Cal are? Is there a limited time period allowed before the car has to be reg'd etc with the authorities there? We're thinking the cars will only be there for 2-3 weeks...

I don't think you'd be dealing much with CA DMV, but rather with the DOT & EPA on the Federal level since they're the ones who decide what gets let into the country.

A good place to start your research:
http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/TempInfo.html
http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/impo...g/box7form.pdf

Edit: Also, Laguna strictly enforces sound limits that some stock cars can't even meet. Do your homework & some testing ahead of time or your trips thru the Corkscrew may be very few.

Are you guys gonna visit tracks in east coast too? I'm interested in joining you guys. I've seen a quite a lot of cars with European plates around Washington DC area. Don't know how they import them but seeing Gumball people bringing their cars to do their rally thing, should be too tough.

Holger, thanks for the links. What is the limit for Laguna?

datax,
I mooted the idea of doing an East-West Routish66 kind of thing and it would be flippin' awesome to do all the tracks in between... but I suspect it's more an issue of budget - both time and money!

But this begs the question: on the west coast, what tracks/circuits are really worth doing apart from Laguna?

I believe east coast has better tracks in general.

You should start with getting your cars down here to South Florida! Homestead speedway first, then some party at South Beach. Next natural step would be Sebring International just 200miles north of Miami.
I guess you could go on with Road Atlanta, Virginia International etc. proceeding your way up north.
The east coast is congested with great tracks!!

I'd love to join you for outings on Homestead and Sebring as those are my "home tracks"...

It's my understanding that Laguna has to be below a certain average for the year (thank the neighbors) and therefore events can vary as far as the dB limit. Seems to me that 91 is a common limit.

It'd be hard to beat all the tracks we have here in Cali. Some are world famous, while the others are more for the locals' enjoyment. You can drive lots of different courses and get tons of track time in a short timeframe if you want.

It looks/sounds like we could really do with some local knowledge in planning a trip like this! It would be great for RoW Rennlisters to meet up with the US Rennlisters and consider it... a global GT3 convention... we could make it a tour of the various circuits with folks dropping in/out along the way as was suitable for them. You'd build up a 'Passport' stamped with each circuit... local venues/knowledge for evening entertainment... and then an amazing photobook/album to compile at the end for everyone...

It would take everyones' help though...

So importing for < year looks pretty straightforward for us RoWers...

+1. Haven't been to Road Atlanta and Mid-Ohio (planning next year) but Watkins Glen is one of my favorites. VIR is pretty fun too and yes, they are worth visiting. My home track is Summit Point Raceway (1 hour away from Washington DC) but it's nothing compare to the ones most has mentioned above.

Here are some of the vids I found on youtube for better idea of what everyone is talking about. Let us updated. As long as it's in east coast, I can join (may be few of my buddies too).

There are tons of local small tracks that you can go if big ones are busy. You just have to talk locals for those.
