FWIW I was told $1800 when haggling over my car last summer...
I don't expect the CPO to come in really handy... but my thought was that the engine is a $35000 lump... so a CPO would be cheap insurance...
I guess my answer is it is worth "peace of mind" and that is hard to find for $1800 anywhere... legally of course...

When I bought my "3" recently \i had an opportunity to save $2500 and skip the cpo. I paid the extra so obviously it was worth it to me. I think the piece of mind for 2 years on an item as complex and expensive as this makes it a good deal even at $3000. This is part of the reason cars sold through dealers command more money than private sales.
