Fabspeed muffler bypass install
#16
I have to put the mufflers on for Laguna Seca...I have been black flagged there with the mufflers on (90db day)...got it down to 10 minutes a side...take off the rear wheel and it's easier...you can also tech the rear pads, rotors and suspension while you are at it....

Fabspeed claims they are "emissions legal", not sound legal!
I researched a bit in my neck of the woods (Sacramento, CA). Sound is "at the officers discretion". I have had my bypass on for about 2.5 years and never a problem with the law. You just have to be "easy" on the throttle and it aint too bad.
Also, it is loud on cold start. However, if it is an issue (eg: early morning in the neighborhood). You can start the car, let it idle for 3-4 seconds (to get oil pressure up), then shut it off...then restart after a couple seconds. It will not be loud. I keep the garage door closed......(insulated door too!), start car and run briefly the shut off. Then hit garage door opener button and refire the car. Then back out and head out. My neighbors claim that they don't hear me in the morning now (although I think they are jsut getting used to it!).
I think what is happening is this....
On newer cars, to met cold start emissions requirements, there is a "cold start program", and sometimes an air pump to heat the cats more quickly. Some companies put the cats right on the header to make them heat more quickly. When the program and/or pump is on, it changes the exhaust note quite a bit. By starting the car breifly, you warm the sensor a bit. Then when you restart, the sensor is warm already, thus, it does not engage the cold start program and the exhaust note is much more subdued.
Just my $.02 and experience with emissions requirements......Tim

I bought these knowing they would be loud. I asked specifically if they met the stringent noise level requirement at Lime Rock. Fabspeed is in PA, not too far so I knew they knew of Lime Rock's issues.
I was assured they were compliant at that track. If they are not and some of you know this to be true let me know. They will go back to Fabspeed because I will not change mufflers in and out 10 times a season. I just got off Lime Rock's web site and I am now not sure where it says they have a noise limit. I know some events are "unmuffled" but thought most had a limit. I sure am wondering what it is now.

Jim, they are definately not as close as they appear. I will probably tweak them down though. Thanks.
For you and all the others that say you will just use them for the track, I cannot personally imagine swapping them out for track days to gain a few hp's and 50lb savings. That would never be worth it for me. Do you guys really do that?

107db at Thunderhill??? Where do they put the sound meter??!! That level would fail Lime Rock I believe by a lot (until I went to look it up and can't find the number).

Bypass pipe's are great for saving weight, but when I had them on my turbo they were just obnoxious and deafening, made the car sound horrible and lost lots of low end torque!
For the GT3 it sounds better, but I can't imagine how much louder it must be with no turbos to quiet it down, i'm use to straight through exhausts and loud setups, BUT this was on an entirely different level, how can you guy's stand it?

Thread Revival....
To the best of my knowledge, Miller Motorsports Park has no sound restrictions *yet*.... Under this assumption, times-a-wasting....
So should I buy the Fabspeed muffler bypass pipes? Should I also by the Cat bypass pipes? My "3" is a track only car, and I really want to hear the car more - plus free up some rear weight as well as enable better cooling in the high desert...
Thanks-
