Default I am thinking of letting the GT3 go...

I have a shot at snagging an RS. I don't know what to ask or expect for my car. Dealer will give 70k.

But is the upgrade really worth it??

It all depends on what you use the car for and how fat your wallet is.

My opinion - if a track car...spend $$ and get the 996 setup properly with the right equiment and most likely you will be faster than most 997 GT3's (RS or not).

If you are looking to spend some cash and want the latest bling in the garage....go for the RS. Performance wise - YES - the 997 is better but not that much better.

Rolo the 997 GT3 or RS is (for now) a bit faster but more versatile. It is not as punishing on the street as the 996GT3. If you live in an area where roads are smooth, you might not notice the difference.

Note I said "for now". As we get more miles and sort the cars out better, I am confident that the RS at least has more potential than the 996. We aren't there yet. We had years of prior experience on the 996 after all.

Best,

I turned down an early '08 GT3 allocation (Sept. delivery) this afternoon.

I'm going to pick up a 996 GT3.

In my opinion the RS is the ultimate road legal Porsche (and yes I'm aware of the Carrera GT). Above this you only get the R, RSR and Cup - all of them not approved for road use. The RS it´s the perfect track weapon and one of the most impressive and beautiful Porsche ever produced. If money isn't an issue, I wouldn't think twice.

I think it's worth it if you use the car both on street and track. The RS really shines by changing itself with a simple button touch.

If you're just tracking - the performance improvement is not worth the money for now.

Also be prepared for Mk.II versions of 997 GT3's probably deliverable around spring-09 or so. Mk.I should see a price drop in about a year or so when the Mk.II is announced.

Thanks for all the input, my biggest concern is the price of the RS over the GT3. It seems that they don't delieve all the "GOODIES" you're paying for with the RS.

I honestly love my 996-3, but have never been a fan of the look of the 996. But I will have to decide soon or I'll lose the chance at an RS. I actualy called to try and get on the 08 gt3 allocation and this kind of fell in my lap. Part of me says "grab up this great car" and the other side says "Its a lot more money for a wide body and carbon tail"

996 is more pure 997 is more comfortable. Decide what you want more and if it's worth spending more money on it. And the 997 is prettier.

Have you encountered any 997 GT3's on the track and did they leave you behind?

Yes I have, and yes they did....somewhat. But as far as outright straight line speed not really. But under braking and turning they had an advantage. But then I'm on PS2s and they are on PSC's
