Default Adjusting 996/GT3/GT2 shift cables

What is the proper process to adjust 996 shift cables?

It is actually a 996 Supercup shifter & cup cables on a 6 speed H-pattern shifter... But I was told the adjusting is the same...

Everything is new and installed and I need to properly adjust the cables?

Thanks,
Norm

The factory usually supplies a small plastic jig for this procedure. The jig clips on the shift lever and you simply adjust the cables at the 2 turnbuckles until the jig drops down and seats in the slots on the shift console. The adjustment is critical for the proper operation of the handset/cables.
Good luck, Jerry

Jerry,

Finally some instructions - THANK YOU!!!

The shifter did come with the plastic jig.

So to clarify instructions:

(1) The jig goes on the shift level - with the clips just touching the edge of the shifter housing.

(2) Adjust the 2 turnbuckles until the jig drops down and seats in the slots on the shift console.
Please confirm the turnbuckels are on the shifter end of the cable - not the trans end.

Silly question.. the shift cables are different colors - how do I know which cable goes on which lever both on the trans and on the shift unit?

I was guessing they probably dont cross over so they would run straight from the trans to the same side of the shifter unit - is that correct?

Thanks again,
Norm

Yes, the turnbuckles are the ones near the shifter, but you will need to tighten the jam nuts on the cables near the gearbox as well if they are not already tight. As for the cables, the larger blue one goes on the right and you may need to fabricate a bracket to hold it down in the housing. The cable run directly back and do not cross over one another, that is true....Jerry

Jerry,

The cables are installed and working well.

Question - the parts came with a bottle of what I think is cable oil/lube.

Do I need to lube brand new ssupercup shift cables? If so how?

Thanks,
Norm

Norm, good job on the cables, it will make a vast improvement in the feel and reliability of the whole shifting system. I do not think the cables ever need to be lubed, they are sealed at both ends with very high quality parts. I am not sure what the mystery lube is for, I have never gotten any. I get my parts from PMNA...perhaps they do not supply it for the race cars, assuming the cables and handset are a lifed part....which they actually are...Good luck, and do keep in touch, Jerry

The cables and shift console run just under $1100.00. The PN are 996 424 010 9A and 996 424 040 75.
