I've heard (on thos forum, I think) that a single over rev incident (running into the limiter) will result in hundreds of type 1 counts... but these are safely ignored. True?

I believe there is a maximum number of #1 over revs reported by the compouter. Something like 655,000 or so. Next time I get there, I'll let you know. Mine has aready reset to ZERO a few times.

You and me both! You aren't really driving the GT3 unless you shift just short of the rev limiter and even nip it on every shift just as the clutch is going in. There is power all the way to the cutoff!

You mean you have over 655,000 range 1 over revs ? Or you have reset the computer. That's a lot of overs. I know they don't do any damage or void the warranty but you should really give second gear a try sometime !
Just teasing !
I have about 18,000 range 1 and I was a little worried that it was getting a little high but, I guess I have a long way to go. My home track has a few stretches that make bouncing off the limiter necessary to be quicker. I won't feel guilty about it anymore.

The range (X) overrevs are probably stored as 16-bit integers so the maximum number would be 2^16 = 65536.

My statement was tongue in cheek. I have no idea how many times I have hit the rev limter, nor do i care. It is several times EVERY time I drive my car. Everyone should test it daily to make sure it is still working.

If the numbers were to reset to zero I can think of a really easy way to erase Range 1-6 values with a $5 MCU but you should be able to do it with nothing more than the diagnostic port.

Speedster:

My 2004 GT3 has a similar problem....goes flat at 7160 RPM. Diagnostics indicate right bank is misfiring. Car is currently at the dealer getting debugged. What was the final resolution to your problem??

You know, I forgot to follow up on this thread. Thanks for reminding me!

I took it to the local PCar dealer back in March. They fixed it under warranty, and I remember their work order charged Porsche $222. I just looked at my invoice, and they note the following:
*replaced camshaft variable timing solenoid
*replaced vario cam valve (996-105-303-71)
Everything has worked fine since...

Good luck!

Just picked up my car this past Wednesday, July 11th. Wow, what a wait!!

A VarioCam Actuator had to be replaced in the right bank. The engine had to be removed to make the repair (not a big deal in a 911) and the part had to be ordered from Germany. Apparently it had to be manufactured as there was no stock. This took 2.5 weeks. Diagnosing the problem with Porsche and making the final fix added 3 more weeks.

All was covered under warranty. The dealer was still figuring out the bill but, for obvious reasons, he wanted me to get my car to me, so I don't know all the bits that went into the repair.

So far I have only run it up to 8000 rpm in 2nd gear and it appears to be as good as new!! Will know for sure when I take it to Calabogie on Monday.

Glad to hear it Martini! I have not had a problem since, and all is now well in GT3 world!
