Default Help, LWFW Noise!!

Had the LWFW installed and the dealer is concerned with the tranny noise. It is a clacking noise that can be felt into the shifter. Behaves like you would expect, push in the clutch and the noise goes away. I was expecting some noise but wasn't sure how much, I've never actually heard one installed. So I don't have any reference as to what be acceptable, noise wise. If someone could give a detailed description as to what I shoud expect to hear it would most appreciated. I realize it's difficult to explain a noise to someone but a best try would be a help.

Is there anyone with a LWFW going to the Glen for the Vintage weekend, weekend after this weekend. It would be great if I could hear what one is supposed to sound like.

Sounds normal. To reduce some of the noise put in some Mobil 1 gear oil.

Sounds ok to me. It should sound like marbles were thrown into your transmission (chattering sound). Welcome to the world of LWFW...

icon,
Don't bother me a bit. Just scared the bejesus out of the tech when he first started it. Guess he had never heard one before and neither he nor I new exactly what to expect. Hearing the noise for the first time and not knowing exactly what to expect I can understand why someone would think there might be a problem. I wasn't there initally and he was just concerned about the noise. Although I did warn him there would be gear noise. Bottom line, noise isn't a problem, so long as it is normal operation.

The working cycles and firing order of the engine cause speed fluctuations resulting in irregularities which lead to torsional vibrations along the entire drive train. These torsional vibrations may cause all loose, non-driven parts with play to rattle, chatter or bounce (loose gearwheels, parts of the synchronisation system). This may result in annoying transmission noise, especially at low engine speeds and high transmission oil temperatures.

So basically, get used to it

Default LWFW Sounds

If you start getting used to the sounds, you will be ready for a Carrera GT!!!

After driving the CGT around, the GT-3 with LWFW is downright quiet!!

Sounds just like mine. Viper bob is right. Mobile 1 helps.

Great upgrade BTW.

I did the LWFW and Cup gears and am trying to get used to the unusual noises my car makes. After the initial install we discovered the newly installed third gear was defective, causing a loud whine. We pulled the trans and sent it out for corrective repairs. It is quieter now but the "marbles in the trans" noise is still there. Get used to the noise, its part and parcel of the new mods. In addition to the slight weight reduction my car is much quicker thru the gears than it was before. I would do the mods again, as it is worth listening to the noises for the additional performance.
Regards

Going to install the LWFW, 4:1 R&P gear and floating hat rotors next week... considered a new exhaust at the same time but wanted to hear the mechanicals for a while before deciding if/what exhaust system to install.

dirtdoc,
What rotors did you end up with, that is my next adventure. I was considering AP 360's from whilwood (sp?). more noise, yea!

et al,
Thanks for all your comments and reassurance, showed this to the guys in the shop and they feel much better knowing they didn't screw anything up, me too.

Thanks again,
Ray
