Good stuff and a serious investment!

With that said, the only gear oil I would use is the Mobil DELVAC. When I had my box re-built by Copans with cup gears as well as the cup diff, he said he would ONLY stand behind his work (warranty) if DELVAC was used.

Boy, is this all confusing/depressing. Mobil has no reference at all to PTX, even on their German website. The only clear statement regarding Delvan for Porsche transaxles I could find is from LN Engineering: <http://www.lnengineering.com/store/c...cant-p-39.html> And, $45 a gallon seems a lot better deal than $117/gal for PTX.

Thanks Dell for the PTX data (I can't read the Delvac links, but the Delvac data sheets are available on Mobil website: <http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...90_80W-140.asp> The most noticeable difference is the viscosity at low temp; Delvac is much thicker at 40degC (120 centiStokes v. 77) and it isn't rated at 0degC where PTX is (590 cSt)

We agree this is confusing and depressing. With the age of the fleet now, I expect a lot more owners will be interested in changing their oil so I borught this topic forward.

I am most worried about the factory stock limited slip clutch discs wearing even faster or corroding so I am sticking with the specified Mobilube PTX. This is where the $45 oil deal is bad if it causes an issue and the transaxle has to be repaired. Some people, like LVDell have modified transaxle components so they have lubricant choices.

Default Another transaxle solution

I know this is an old thread, but there is another option to the shell 999 917 546 00 transaxle fluid and the mobil product: it's the Audi G 052 911 A2 fluid. A reputable Porsche transmission shop (G Box) told me it's the exact same fluid, only re-branded under the Audi brand. Sounds logical to me, especially since all are now part of the VW family. Thought this would be helpful!

It might be relabeled Shell Transaxle, but Delvac it is not. Why in the world would you want to "risk" buying the fluid from the VW dealer anyway????

For those that don't track, this is probably a one time change anyway so why NOT go with the Porsche label stuff? For those that track, Delvac is the only way to go.

When Brian Copans rebuilt my gearbox he told me the only fluid he would warrant the box with is Delvac. He's a name you trust when it comes to gearboxes.

I’m putting the search function to good use! Another thread from the dead… Would have thought the topic here was presidential politics and not transaxle fluid.

Now that these cars have a few miles on them has it been determined what is best for our cars?

Option 1 – Mobil Delvac 75W-90 Gear Lube http://www.lufteknic.com/Merchant2/m...ode=lubricants

Option 2 – Porsche 1 liter containers 99991754600 – Whatever brand or formulation is in it. http://www.suncoastparts.com/product...de=996gt3trans

Thanks for the help.

I just flushed and filled with motul 75w140 and the gearbox feels great. it also quieted down my lwfw chatter.

I asked Matt (guard) whether this was ok to use and he confirmed it is.

In my opinion nothing has changed if you have a stock transaxle you use the only lubricant recommended by Porsche AG, Mobilube PTX. Why gamble?

Whichever you choose, change the gearbox oil often. On 996 cup cars, the manual says every ten hours and this with the regular gearbox. When I saw that and changed mine the oil was black as heck after about 20 track days. Now I change it more often
