Question RS Plexi rear windows?

Has anyone replaced the glass rear windows with the RS plexi? what is the weight savings and is there any down side to doing this?

I have them in my 73RS and the obvious downside is that composite windows are more easily scratched and become hazy if not carefully cared for (especially when cleaning).

With a cage, it's going to be a hassle to clean them as well.

The rears 1/4 windows are available from Motorsport for several hundred per side, the rear window itself is about $425.

Porsche Motorsports Side windows from the '04 and later Cup Car are 996 543 111 03 / ...112 03 $101.35 (each) may now supercede to 996 543 111 90 and ...112 90 $345.00 (each!). These are the side windows with the louvers in them, (diagonal slits) to reduce interior cabin pressure.

The pair of side windows can also be had via an aircraft and race car lexan window manufacturer at $350 (both, hooray!). They also manufacture the closed/attaches to window frame door windows with slider ports.
For an extra $50, they'll add the 1" black trim flat edging that is seen on the factory 1/4 windows.

Austin,

Good info, thanks! Do you know what the weight savings are? Also, do you have the contact info for the Lexan window mfg. you are mentioning?

I had lexan in the rear and sides of my old race car. With the cage it was impossible to clean the rear inside window .

That's what neighborhood kids are for... $5 per window?

To clean a lexan rear window in a car with a cage, try using a "Swiffer" on a handle. Note lexan wants to be wiped off and then polished with pledge (or equivalent). Never use windex or window cleaners designed for glass which contain ammonia or other harsh agents which will cloud the surface.

Best,

I checked a few websites and it would appear that changing all 3 rear windows will drop 24.8lbs. Does this sound right?

I noticed some of the quarter windows have louvers in them. What are the louvers or slots for?

GRussell,

I did some weight investigation, just took some window glass about same size and put it on the shipping scale, it appeared to be about a 7lb savings per each 1/4 window. Rear window would (guesstimating here...) be about 15+lbs savings. If the goal is to make weight in a particular class, the savings from being weight up higher on the car would be beneficial, as generally it's better to add ballast lower on the car.

The non-Motorsport side and rear windows are made by a company in the US named Specter, we (Devek) have an account with them where we purchase 2 sets per order, it works well. The part number 996R.LEX are 1 week timeframe for manufacture. They are $350 + $50 for the black trim.

The louvers are to decrease positive cabin pressure for better aero.

The weight saving for replacing the rear window and side windows is under 10 lbs combined. I don't think it's worth it. The street GT3 glass is pretty light.

Instead, go for a CF roof (RSR part) with similar weight saving benefits, but removed from the highest point.
