Default GT2 03 vs 04 wheel weight?

Hi Gang!

Anyone know if the newer GT2 wheels (similiar to the GT3 design) weigh less than the 03 GT2 wheels. My 03 stock wheels have BBS on the back and are REALLY heavy. Can't see the benefit of the CC brakes with such a heavy wheel.

Any thoughts?

Have fun! Steve

Steve,

The 04's are lighter than the 03's. I do not remember the difference.

The '04 GT2 wheels weigh (according to bathroom scales):

Front ~11kg/24lbs
Rear ~13kg/29lbs

Stamped on the back is the following: GK-AlSi7Mg0.4Wa

And "Italy"

The above stamping seems to indicate that there is some content of Magnesium in the wheel - any chemists/metallurgists on here ?

Made in Italy - not BBS then, possibly Speedline ?

2003 GT2 wheels are 28 front 33 rear (turbo style). I have both however the 2004's have MPSC's on them and they are alot lighter, so maybe the tire is lighter as well.

I’m pretty sure if they say “Italy” they are replicas. Are your rear wheels 12” wide? If they are and are reproductions they are likely significantly heavier than oem.

If they have all that stuff stamped on the back then yes they are OEM, the ones I had definitely were I bought them from Gert (Carnewal) on my birthday (just looked at invoice) 15 years ago were 2910 Euro + VAT

Yes, they have everything you mentioned. They came on my 03' GT2, a prior owner must have gotten them and put them on since they were not standard until the '04-'05 cars.

Thank you for chiming in on this and I'm glad you keep receipts this long

Yes the sizes are 8.5X18 ET40 and 12X18ET45

They are not too bad in weight, the original '02 GT2 wheels were 11.4kg and 14.4kg, the main thing is they are strong

I stand corrected then. Just curiouis why a known BBS design would feature a "made in Italy" stamp if it were not a knock-off. I know the similar shaped (but narrower) 996tt variant (hollow spoke) are stamped "BBS." Maybe Porsche had a different company do the larger gt2 sized wheels.

Are the GT3 OEM wheels BBS then? It would sound odd to have that same design, just slightly larger, be made by a different co. The TT Turbo Twist design seems different enough that it being made by a different co is possible but GT3 in a different size seems questionable but what do I know, I don't know much about wheel sizes period let along manufacturing of them

Looking at OEM GT3 wheels I am seeing Italy is stamped on those as well which tells me that @TB993tt is correct, the GT3 style GT2 wheels with Italy are OEM
