Default 1000 mile "break-in"

From what I read in the Owner's manual the 05 GT3 is considered broken-in @ 1000 miles. My car, with 1035 miles, feels very tight. (I bought it yesterday so I really don't have a clue as to its history) The PO drove the car about 80 miles per month since he bought it in Dec 04.
My guess is that I would continue to avoid RPMs over say 5500 for a while. My 997 didn't "loosen up" until about 1800 miles.
Oil was changed using Mobil 1 @ 650 miles in April.

PS. The last 4 numbers of my VIN are 2114. What does this number mean in terms of production sequence.

Amen Geoff>>>>>> Larry it is time to hit 7,500 RPM while getting on the 10. The ramps are a lot of fun.You will remember the experience. Please provide us your impressions.

After California dusting the black bitch I'll warm her up and see what she's like. LOL

https://rennlist.com/forums/996-gt2-gt3-forum/246538-usa-gt3-sales-thru-end-of-year.html

Larry,

Change the oil + filter again in about 500 miles. Who knows what metal particals are still floating the engine. You are bascily breaking the car in.

Cos,
I agree with you about changing the oil and will make an appointment shortly. I just feel better knowing I have fresh Mobil 1 in essentially a new car. Did my first coat of Zaino last night, and put conditioner on my seats.
Thanks to all

Proper oil changes never hurt the engine, just use the proper oil for this engine (factory fill is Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W-40).

Your car's oil change history so far.

0 miles - your engine was run at the factory on the dynamometer and then that oil was changed

650 miles - second oil change (and filter?)

1535 miles - third oil and filter change (suggested by Cosmos)

993-996
I assume the filter was changed at the last oil change, but I don't know for sure. The change was done @ Pioneer Porsche in San Diego.

Quick question:
The last two mornings when I started my car I have heard a distinct rattling noise lasting about 1 minute. Once the RPMs drop to about 800 the rattle seems to subside, but you can still hear it. The noise isn't RPM dependent and is somewhat irregular. Doesn't sound like a tappet noise at all.

Hi;

The filter and seals should be on the invoice for that dealer oil change.

Without doing a proper oil analysis at a laboratory nobody but Porsche AG knows how much "wear in" metal is in the engine when it has so few miles. Cosmos's suggestion was made as an inexpensive 'just in case' procedure to ensure the engine components don't get any extra wear from loose metals.

The Rattle Sound. Do you feel a vibration in the clutch pedal at first cold start as well? We have had previous discussions about this sound and others, if it is the same one, then it is normal. My car makes the big rattle sound for about 2 seconds, then the idling engine gets quieter and rpm drops at about 2 and a half minutes (not driven for 14 days, ambient temperature 54 F, car stationary). These cars are of the "Club Sport" flavor so you hear more mechanical sounds than in other Porsche models. Sit in a GT3 Cup or GT3 RSR and listen to it at idle...

So when was your car manufactured?

Larry,

The noises will drive you nuts with worry until you discover they are normal. Can not compare it to any other P car. If there is someone on your area with one sit side by side and you will hear the "normal" sounds.

Do not worry. I took mine in to the dealer a few times for noises that were normal.

My car rattles like that too. 05 GT3 with 4900 miles. The duration of the rattle is directly proportional to how many days the car sat in the garage without being driven.

Its the smog pump and cats warming up. It is a TWO stage process. The first is it will sound like a pop corn kernals rattling in an old fashion pop corn popper. That should last till the cats are warm, then STRAIGHT after like 2 seconds, the smog pump shuts down and the cars idle drops again.

It is slight, but there.

The rattles are so normal it is funny. You will hear bangs, pops, rattles, squeaks, pings and boings. All normal. These cars dont break, so all the noises are normal. If something is out of wack, you WILL feel it, NOT hear it.

Thanks guys for holding my hand during my latest crisis. I have a tendency to worry about everything. Right now I'm worrying the wind will pick up and get "Black Fang" even dustier that she got in my sealed garage overnight. I need my meds

I find the exact same to be true. If my car sits for a week it rattles for a few seconds. If I drive it again the next day, no rattle.

Enjoy your car!
