997GT3 vs 996GT3; a logical conclusion!

The 997GT3 will get a 3.8L dry sump motor according to 997gt3.com.
These guys are from Europe and they travel to the ring on a reg. basis and have had conversations with Walter Rohl about it.
Obviously, it is still considered speculation, but we are getting close I think.
Porsche always under claims their HP ratings anyways.
I can't see why they would place a 3.6L motor in the GT3 again. I think doing that will canabilize (sp?) some sales b/c then people who have the MKII GT3 with the same 3.6L motor can modify their vehicles to what the factory does on the MKIII GT3, that's why I'm thinking it will be a 3.8L instead.

Phillip and All,
I think the new 997GT3 will be far better looking than the 996 GT3 I have in my garage at the moment, but I still think my 996 is a great looking car! I also don't see how the new GT3 can be anything but faster than the the current model but whether it's .2 seconds faster or 2 seconds faster per lap than my 04 GT3 I really can't see he rational for wanting to trade up to the new one. The current GT3 is an extremely serious road car that can only be outperformed by very few cars currently available today no matter the price. I am reasonably sure that fact will hold true for quite some time to come so for my purposes if a well driven 997 GT3 can pull away from me at track day is of little concern, I will still be one of the fastest street cars with AC and a CD player with full leather interior out there on any given day and it will still be quite a thrill to cut a good lap in, so I happy where I am.

Darn I just got my GT3 a year ago and people are ready to buy the next reinteration of the GT3. I have yet to even approach it's limits. Do you guys do 35-40 DE's a year and 10-12 races a year? I sure wish I could. Regards. Mike

It stands to reason then that the 997 GT3 will more HP and a superior chassis will be markedly better than a 996 GT3. That's progress (for most people). And, that's what Porsche does with each of it's new models - it improves on previous models. It would be unrealistic to dispute that.
I don't doubt the 997 GT3 will be a step forward although I suspect largely due to the engine, but I'm not buying your claim that a 997S is faster than a mk2 GT3.
As to the 997 having more character? Hows that work given its even more friendly and less likely to remind you its engine is behind the rear axle?
You don't happen to own a 997S with sports suspension do you?

More HP, etc. are only diminished returns at this point. Stock to stock it will of course be better, but if you've already modified your car and taken out the weaknesses there is no justifcation other than marketing hype.
My last track day (this past weekend), I've finally got the car to be set up perfect. I have no issues. For me to be any faster: 1) I need to take weight out of the car (how many compromises am I willing to make) and 2) I must drive 10/10ths. If I had more HP, I could of never used it. I do not race much on high speed ovals (once a year)-most is under 140, so I doubt 15/25 hp will be noticable.
If I want to go any faster, I would want a full cage and a cup car will be the next purchase not a 997 GT3. That is a fact!!!

Let's see: 19" wheels, sunroof, PSM, 997 chassis. Is the 997GT3 going to be lighter than a 996GT3? My stock 996GT3 weighed arounf 3130 lbs with 1/8th of a gas tank stock. That might put a 997GT3 close to 3200 lbs in actual weight.
I'm sure Porsche will make the 997GT3 a faster car at the track compared to a 996GT3, but compared to the 996 GT3RS I doubt it. If the 997GT3 is faster at the track than the 996GT3, it might be by tenths of a second. $50,000 to gain a few tenths of a second is not worth it in my opinion.

Costa - Where do you get 40 percenbt? Dan has pointd out that the GT3 uses the C4 chassis which is stiffer than the C2 to start with and then it is seam weldd for more stiffness. I really doubt the 997S or 997 anything is stiffer than the GT3. A regular 996 perhaps although the 996 is not bad when it comes to chassis flex in the first place.
The 996 GT3 is closely related to the Cup car, heck my engine case even says "Cup" on it.
Lastly I have driven a 997S on track extensively. It is good but no GT3.

I had a 03 996 c2 and now the GT3. I have driven both 997 models. I can't envision the chasis being 40% stiffer then the C2 I had much less the GT3. I don't belive the 997 is a big leap at all from the 996, outside of some electronic wizardry.
