Default Porsche GT3 Yellow

Well - I did it! Got it in the Garage as we speak, next to the Z06.

Very cool car, and not nearly as stiff as I was worried about.

My mother wants to know if it's a 911 GT3 or a Carrera GT3. Is that a valid question?

Also - is there a VIN database that will tell me the build number of this GT3?

Congrats on the purchase. Let us know what you think compared with your Z06.

The Z06 is, well, funner to drive. However, the GT3 feels more like a drivers car. More serious. You've got to be paying attention. It's not mean by any stretch, but ignorance, or a glass of wine will have you regretting your decision to sit behind the wheel if you are that foolish.

Ok - let me clarify:

The porsche steering is tighter. The GT3 wanders as the toe in is much less than a standard car. The GT3 steering wheel has those little bumps at 10 and 2 that are just, well, cool. The GT3 is lower, and the seats are firmer/hold the driver better. The stereo is not as good.

The Z06 is a more fun car. Easier to get out of shape, and then collect again. Slide that rear end around? No problem. Have fun. It's got more body roll. It's bigger, and has more cargo carrying capacity. It's a more "sensical" car. It can do more day to day. It's as fast or faster straight line. I can put 3 golf bags into the Z06. I cannot put any into the GT3.

Who's the better car? I don't know. They are different. They are both fast, and they are both nimble. Just in different ways.

Fit and finish of the Z06 vs. the Porsche. Not sure I care. The stereo of the Z06 is better. Though I am not sure I bought the GT3 for the stereo!

Which will I be driving in 6 months? I don't know. I do know I see more Corvette's than I see Porsche's. And I have only seen one GT3 so far. (mine!).

I do feel the german mythical "precision" in the GT3. For example - most cars I have driven if you are below 10mph, the analog speedometer shows something - but not the real speed. Whereas the GT3 shows exactly what you are driving. Be it 1mph or 3mph. You can tell. Most other cars, below 10mph is a vague area.

The shifter is shorter, but I don't know if I really can say it's "better" or "worse". Just different. I have not gotten back into the Z06 yet - I am having too much fun with the "new" car.

I hope that this does not start a huge my dick is larger than your dick discussion. That is not what I intend here. Just a fellow car enthusiast who has a corvette and now a GT3 comparing my initial impressions.

Also remember- I just got the GT3 - so the sun is still shining out it's ***! so to speak.

Cheers!

That's a great comparo.

I'm interested because I occasionally ponder picking up a used Z06 for a dedicated track dog. The problem is that I constantly see them "broke" at my track events and have little problem keeping up or passing them even though I'm on street tires. Driver vs. Car? I'm not sure... but for the price, a used Z06 seems like a plausible option.

Thanks and welcome aboard.

Glad to offer my opinion!

As I go back and forth between them - I'll write my options/ideas. My gut tells me that the American Sports car mindset is all about acceleration and I suspect that the Z06 might edge out the GT3. However, the German sports car mindset is more about the whole package/handling.

Certainly the GT3 is tighter than the Z06 and the Turbo X50 I drove.

Based on my track experience, the Z06 is more than enough competition for any non "GTx" 996 Porsche. The GT3 might be a different matter in the corners though.

As always Jim, your comment about Driver is right on. A Skilled driver would probably beat a poor driver regardless of car choices. So, direct comparisons are just tough to do.

For the money though, a C5 Z06 is just impossible to beat. I hestitate to think about what the C6 Z06 is going to be like with 505HP. But I digress..

Happy driving all. I am just happy that I have the opportunity to really examine both the Corvette Z06 and the Porsche GT3 in first person. It's going to be an interesting ride!

I wonder what car I will be driving most 6 months from now?

Kevin,

If you want to know what "build number" your GT3 is please give me the last for digits of your VIN.

And by the way your garage now looks like mine!!!

MJ and ZO6Kevin,

Nice looking garages. I anticipate a similar setup in the future as this version of the Z06 might come down in price enough and become the ultimate "low risk" track car. Not sure if the 2006 ZO6 will follow suit or not.

The GT3 is phenomenal (IMO) but expensive enough to hold me back at the track more than I'd like to admit. It was fun at Putnam cracking 140 on the front straight...not bad for a shortish straight and difficult last corner to handle for entry.

Cheers.
